The 2005 League of Ireland First Division season was the 21st season of the League of Ireland First Division. Overview The First Division was contested by 10 teams and Sligo Rovers won the division, finishing two points clear of Dublin City. Each team played the other teams four times, totalling 36 games. The League of Ireland First Division ( ga, Céad Roinn Sraith na hÉireann), also known as the SSE Airtricity League First Division, is the second level division in both the League of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland football league system. The division was formed in 1985. It replaced the League of Ireland B Division as the League of Ireland's second level division. Since 2003 the First Division has operated as a summer league. 2005 League Of Ireland
The 2005 League of Ireland Premier Division was the 21st season of the League of Ireland Premier Division. The division was made up of 12 teams. Cork City F.C., Cork City were champions while Derry City F.C., Derry City finished as runners-up. This was the first time the title had been won by a club from outside County Dublin since 1996–97 League of Ireland Premier Division, 1996–97. Overview The regular season began on 16 March and ended on 18 November. Each team played three rounds of games, totalling 33 games each. The season witnessed a decline in the fortunes of one of the League of Ireland's oldest surviving members. The League of Ireland Cup 2005 was the 32nd staging of the League of Ireland Cup. The 2005 League Cup kicked off in May. A representative team of the Mayo League joined the 22 league clubs in the draw. There were fourteen clubs drawn to face each other in the first round, with the rest given byes to the second round. Tadhg Purcell
Tadhg Purcell (born 2 September 1985) is an Irish footballer who plays for Dunbar Rovers FC in the National Premier League. His main position is as a striker, although he can play on the wing. He spent his youth with Leicester Celtic, before joining Kilkenny City in 2004. He moved onto Shamrock Rovers two years later, and enjoyed a successful three-year spell with the club, helping Shamrock to win the First Division title in 2006. He won a move to English club Darlington in January 2010, before joining Northampton Town six months later. He was loaned back to Darlington in September 2011, and later went out on loan to Irish side Cork City. He joined Australian side Marconi Stallions in March 2013, he then joined Rockdale City Suns in 2014, and North Shore Mariners in 2015. Tolka Park ( ga, Páirc na Tulchann) is an Irish football ground located in the north Dublin suburb of Drumcondra, on the northern banks of the River Tolka. It is currently the home ground of League of Ireland club Shelbourne. The stadium formerly held 9,680 people, but this has been scaled down in recent times due to health and safety regulations in the venue, mainly concerning the 'New' and Ballybough stands. Derek Tracey
Derek Tracey (born 6 April 1971 in Dublin) is a retired League of Ireland association footballer who spent his entire 17 season senior career playing for Shamrock Rovers. He made his debut on 9 August 1989 against St James's Gate F.C. in the Leinster Senior Cup. Tracey made his League of Ireland debut on 19 November 1989 against Dundalk as a substitute. He got his first start following week in Cork. His first goal was against University College Dublin A.F.C. in a 1-0 win on 13 February 1990. He was the club's top goalscorer in 1994–95 with 8 league goals. He was ever present in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. Derek made his 250th league appearance in a great 3-1 win over Bohemians on 19 September 1999. On 26 May 2006, Tracey announced his retirement. Dalymount Park (Irish: ''Páirc Cnocán Uí Dhálaigh'') is a football stadium in Phibsborough on the Northside of Dublin, Ireland. It is the home of Bohemian F.C., who have played there since the early 20th century. Affectionately known as Dalyer by fans, it was also historically the "home of Irish football", holding many Irish internationals and FAI Cup finals. David McGill (footballer)
David McGill (born 24 October 1981) is an Irish retired footballer. Playing career Youth and college McGill played his entire youth career from Under 8's and up with Manortown United. With Manortown, he won both league and cup titles as well as being named the Club Man of the Year while with the Under 16's. At Charlotte He eventually decided to attend college in the US, enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2000. McGill made an instant impact with the Charlotte 49ers, appearing in 18 games, starting 17 of those. He scored 1 goal, assisted on 7 others, en route to score 9 points on the season. His 7 assists lead the team. His second season with the team in 2001 wasn't as productive, with him playing in 20 games while only starting 14 of them. Trevor Molloy
Trevor Molloy (born 14 April 1977 in Dublin) is an Irish former professional footballer. He played in the League of Ireland for Shamrock Rovers (2 seasons), Athlone Town, St Patrick's Athletic (2 seasons), Bohemians and Shelbourne. He also played for English Football League side Carlisle United, Scottish Premiership side Motherwell and for Glenavon in the NIFL Premiership. He is the father of Aaron Molloy, who is also a professional footballer.
