Television in Belgium was introduced in 1953 and began with one channel each in Dutch and French. The country is heavily cabled, with 93% of households watching television through cable as of 2003. History The three Belgian Communities – Dutch, French and German-speaking – have legal responsibility for audiovisual communication. They constitute separate markets, the common feature of which is the fact that they have been extensively cabled for three decades and are thus able to receive neighbouring countries' channels. Until 1978, Radio-Television Belgium ( nl, Belgische Radio- en Televisieomroep; french: Radio-Télévision Belge) was Belgium's national public television broadcaster. Nuno Resende (born 25 June 1973) is a Portugal, Portuguese singer. Biography Early life Nuno was born in Porto, and is an only child. He enrolled at the French school of Porto when he was 5. His family moved to Belgium when he was 12. He is also a Belgian national. As a sport fanatic, he took a training in sports. In 1985, he was admitted into the European School of Brussels. He took part in tournaments, especially the Espérance tennis tournament. Between 1993 and 1996, he attended the Physical Education School where he took a teacher training course for ''regents''. He then decided to attempt a musical career. He formed many hard-rock bands. He takes part in ''Pour la Gloire'', a talent contest on the RTBF in 1997. Eurovision Song Contest 2005
The Eurovision Song Contest 2005 was the 50th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Kyiv, Ukraine, following the country's victory at the with the song "Wild Dances" by Ruslana. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster National Television Company of Ukraine (NTU), the contest was held at the Palace of Sports, and consisted of a semi-final on 19 May, and a final on 21 May 2005. The two live shows were presented by Ukrainian television presenters Maria Efrosinina and Pavlo Shylko. Thirty-nine countries participated in the contest, three more than the previous record of thirty-six, that took part the year before. Bulgaria and Moldova made their first participation this year, while Hungary returned to the contest after a six-year absence, having last taken part in . Le Grand Soir (song)
Belgium participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "Le grand soir" written by Alec Mansion and Frédéric Zeitoun. The song was performed by Nuno Resende. The Belgian entry for the 2005 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine was selected through the national final ''Finale Nationale Concours Eurovision de la Chanson 2005'', organised by the Walloon broadcaster Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF). In the final on 20 March 2005 which featured two competing entries, "Le grand soir" performed by Nuno Resende was selected as the winner after gaining 50.2% of the public televote. Belgium competed in the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on 19 May 2005. Performing during the show in position 11, "Le grand soir" was not announced among the top 10 entries of the semi-final and therefore did not qualify to compete in the final. Katerine Avgoustakis
Katerine Avgoustakis (Greek: Κατερίνα Αυγουστάκη; born 16 September 1983) is a Greek-Belgian singer. She was the winner of the 2005 ''Star Academy'' show. Early life Avgoustakis was born in Maasmechelen, Belgium to a Greek father and a Flemish mother, who died in 2005, at 54 years old, after a long struggle with liver cancer. She plays the piano and used to be in a choir. Career 2002–2006: Indiana, ''Star Academy'' and ''Katerine'' Avgoustakis made her singing debut as a member of the band Indiana in 2002, with whom she participated in the national final to represent Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song "Imitation Love". ''The X Factor'' is a British reality television music competition, created by Simon Cowell. Premiering on 4 September 2004, it was produced by Fremantle's Thames and Cowell's production company Syco Entertainment for ITV, as well as simulcast on Virgin Media One in Ireland. Udo Mechels, born in Brussels on 10 May 1976, is a Belgian singer commonly known simply as Udo. He won the first season of the Belgian version of ''The X Factor'' in 2005. Biography In 2003, Udo participated in the first season of ''Belgian Idols'', but lost in the semi-finals to Chris D. Morton and Tom Olaerts. In 2005, he was a contestant on the Belgian edition of ''The X-Factor'', and won in December 2005. Udo released his debut album ''U-Turn'' and his #1 debut single " Isn't It Time", a cover of the song by The Babys, in 2006. He received a gold record for ''U-Turn'' during the TV programme ''Tien Om Te Zien'' on 4 July 2007. ''Samson & Gert'' is a Flemish children's television series produced by Eline van Noppen, centered on the talking dog Samson and his owner Gert. In its entire run, the show was originally aired on TV1 from Christmas Day 1989 until 1 December 1997, where it moved to Ketnet and continues airing all of its episodes to this day. History Originally Gert Verhulst was a continuity announcer. He wanted to make the announcements before children's television programmes more appealing by having an animal puppet next to him.
