2004–05 Iraqi Premier League
The 2004–05 Iraqi Premier League kicked off on October 20, 2004. The 36 teams were split into four groups. At the end of the group stage, the top three teams from each group (a total of 12 teams) advanced to the Elite Stage, while the bottom three in each group were demoted to the lower division. In the Elite Stage, the 12 teams were split into four groups of three, with teams playing home and away against each team in their group respectively. The top team in each of the four groups moved on to the two-legged semi-finals which determined who played for the championship game; a single match held in Baghdad. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya won their fifth Premier League title with a 2–0 victory over Al-Minaa. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Kirkuk Sports Club ( ar, نادي كركوك) is a football club based in Kirkuk, Iraq. The team plays in Iraq Division Three. Kirkuk participated in the Iraqi Premier League for the first time in 1983–84, but was relegated for several seasons to the lower divisions, before returning to the top-flight seasons later. Zakho Sport Club, also spelled as Zaxo Sport Club ( ku-2, یانا زاخو یا وهرزشی / ''Yana Zaxo ya Werzişî'') is a sports club based in Zakho, Iraqi Kurdistan. Zakho SC's biggest rivals are also their neighbours Duhok SC, with whom they contest the Bahdinan Derby. 2003–04 Iraqi Premier League
The 2003–04 Iraqi Premier League kicked off on January 8, 2004. The name of the league was changed from ''Iraqi First Division'' to ''Iraqi Premier League''. Due to security issues and scheduling difficulties, the season was officially cancelled in June 2004 during the group stage. The top four teams from each group were meant to advance to the elite stage, which would be followed by semi-finals, a third place match and a final, with the champions and runners-up qualifying for the 2005 AFC Champions League and the third and fourth-placed teams qualifying for the 2004–05 Arab Champions League.
