The women's road race of the 2004 UCI Road World Championships cycling event took place on 2 October in Verona, Italy. Starting at 13:30 CEST, the race was 132.75 km long, which constituted of 9 laps of a circuit around Torricelle, including the 3.4 km Torricelle climb, with an average gradient of approximately 4%, 7% at the steepest point. The course was almost identical to the one used for the 1999 UCI Road World Championships when Edita Pučinskaitė won the women's championship. Svetlana Bubnenkova
Svetlana Yuryevna Bubnenkova-Stolbova (Russian Светлана Юрьевна Бубненкова; born 2 January 1973 in Izhevsk, Udmurtia) is a racing cyclist from Russia. She represented her native country at three Summer Olympics: 1996, 2000 and 2004. Her biggest achievement was winning the 2002 Giro d'Italia Femminile. Bubnenkova twice won the world title in the women's team time trial (1993, 1994). She tested positive for the use of EPO in the Tour Féminin en Limousin 2006. In June 2007 she was suspended for two years by the French doping association. Later the UCI adopted this suspension, but due to miscommunications Bubnenkova continued to race in 2007. Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli
Jeannie Longo (born 31 October 1958 in Annecy, Haute-Savoie) is a French racing cyclist, 25-time French champion and 13-time world champion. Longo began racing in 1975 and was active in cycling through 2012. She was once widely considered the best female cyclist of all time, although that reputation is now clouded by suspicion of doping throughout her career. She is famous for her competitive nature and her longevity in the sport — when she was selected to compete for France in the 2008 Olympics, it was her seventh Olympic Games; some of Longo's competitors that year had not yet been born when she took part in her first Olympics in 1984. Christine Thorburn (born September 17, 1969, in Davenport, Iowa) is a retired American professional road cyclist. She became the U.S. women's individual time trial champion in 2004, and later represented the United States in two editions of the Olympic Games (2004 and 2008), where she narrowly missed the podium twice in the same event. Before retiring to pursue her medicine and rheumatology career in 2008, Thorburn rode for the Webcor Builders Cycling Team in the women's elite professional events on the UCI Women's World Cup and on the UCI World Championships, where she took home the bronze medal in 2006. Susan Palmer-Komar (born January 27, 1967 in Collingwood, Ontario) is a Canadian racing cyclist. She represented Canada at the 1996 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics in the women's road race and in 2004 also in the women's time trial. Rasa Polikevičiūtė (born September 25, 1970 in Panevėžys) is a Lithuanian cycle racer. One of her Lithuanian cycling contemporaries is her identical twin, Jolanta Polikevičiūtė. Deirdre "Dede" Demet Barry (born October 8, 1972 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American female cycle racer, six times U.S. champion (4 senior titles, two junior). She has won two World Cup races, two World Championship medals, and, in 2004, the silver medal in the time trial in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Lyne Bessette (born 10 March 1975, Lac Brome, Quebec) is a politician and retired professional bicycle racer from Quebec, Canada. She was elected to represent the riding of Brome—Missisquoi in the 2019 federal election as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.
