2004 CIS Football Season
The 2004 CIS football season began on September 2, 2004, and concluded with the 40th Vanier Cup national championship on November 27 at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario, with the Laval Rouge et Or winning their third championship and second consecutive. Twenty-seven universities across Canada competed in CIS football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Hardy Trophy
The Hardy Trophy is a Canadian sport trophy, presented annually to the winner of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association Football Conference of U Sports, the country's governing body for university athletics. It is named for Evan Hardy, the former head of the agricultural engineering department at the University of Saskatchewan, who had played for the Huskies for its first five years before a rule that only students could play. Hardy continued on as coach and created a western university league. The original trophy was replaced in 1997 after it fell apart during an on-field celebration of the Huskies win in 1996 at home at Griffiths Stadium. The original Hardy trophy was unearthed beneath a pile of storage boxes in 2008 at the University of Saskatchewan. CIS Football
U Sports football is the highest level of amateur play of Canadian football and operates under the auspices of U Sports (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport). Twenty-seven teams from Canadian universities are divided into four athletic conferences, drawing from the four regional associations of U Sports: Canada West Universities Athletic Association, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, and Atlantic University Sport. At the end of every season, the champions of each conference advance to semifinal bowl games; the winners of these meet in the Vanier Cup national championship. The origins of North American football can be traced here, where the first documented game was played at University College at the University of Toronto in 1861. Dominic Picard
Dominic Picard (born June 22, 1982) is a former professional Canadian football centre and is currently the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Sherbrooke Vert & Or of U Sports. He played for four different teams over an 11-year career in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Picard played in 151 regular season CFL games and 11 post-season games and was a member of the 101st Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was also named a CFL East All-Star in 2011. Arjei Franklin
Arjei Franklin (born April 25, 1982) is a former Canadian professional football slotback who played for the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Franklin is an alumnus of Agincourt Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, Ontario. Andrew Fantuz
Andrew Fantuz (born December 18, 1983) is a former professional Canadian football wide receiver. Fantuz spent the majority of his professional career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Riders for six seasons after he was drafted by them in the first round of the 2006 CFL Draft. He then played six seasons for the Tiger-Cats. Andre Durie (born July 27, 1981) is a former professional Canadian football running back/slotback who played for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2007 to 2016. Peter Gorman Trophy
The Peter Gorman Trophy is awarded to the Rookie of the Year in U Sports Football. The Trophy acknowledges the great contribution Peter Gorman has made to the development of Canadian University Football. As founder of the Canadian College Bowl, his emphasis has always been on the youth of Canada, and is therefore associated with the award to encourage U Sports rookies. Mickey Donovan
Mickey Donovan is a professional Canadian football coach who is currently the special teams coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). College career Donovan played college football for two years for the Maine Black Bears where he had 27 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 10 games played. He then transferred to Concordia University to play for the Stingers from 2002 to 2004. He was named a First Team All-Canadian in 2003 and 2004 and also won the Presidents' Trophy in 2004 as the top defensive player in CIS football. Presidents' Trophy (CIS)
The Presidents' Trophy is an annual Canadian sports award presented to the most outstanding defensive player in U Sports football. The trophy was first presented in 1980 after having been championed by two past presidents of Canadian university sports bodies. The name indirectly honours Ed Zemrau, past president of U Sports (then known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union); and Robert Doty, past president of Canada's university football championship game, then known as the College Bowl and now as the Vanier Cup. Jesse Lumsden
Jesse Lumsden (born August 3, 1982) is a Canadian Olympic bobsledder and a retired Canadian football player, who played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders. Career Football Lumsden is the son of former CFL fullback Neil Lumsden. Jesse attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario and Nelson High School in Burlington, Ontario (where he led them to the Metro Bowl Title), and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
