2003–04 Montreal Canadiens Season
The 2003–04 Montreal Canadiens season was the team's 95th season of play, 87th in the National Hockey League. The Canadiens returned to the playoffs this season and made it to the Eastern Conference Semifinals after winning the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Boston Bruins, 4–3, before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4–0. Offseason Bob Gainey, who played his entire 16 season NHL career with Montreal, was named the team’s new general manager on June 2, 2003, and assumed the role on July 1 from Andre Savard, who was demoted to assistant general manager. The Eastern Conference (french: Conférence de l'Est) is one of two conferences in the National Hockey League (NHL) used to divide teams. Its counterpart is the Western Conference. History Originally named the Prince of Wales Conference, it was created in 1974 when the NHL realigned its teams into two conferences and four divisions. Because the new conferences and divisions had little to do with North American geography, geographical references were removed. Cold War (ice Hockey)
The Cold War was a college ice hockey game played between U.S. college rivals Michigan State University and the University of Michigan on Saturday, October 6, 2001. It set a then-world record for the largest crowd at an ice hockey game with 74,544. Longtime rivals with the University of Michigan in hockey (and other sports), MSU decided not to play this contest at East Lansing's Munn Ice Arena, but instead set up the ice rink in the middle of the much larger Spartan Stadium, which they filled to 103.4% capacity. This meant that 74,544 packed the Big Ten football stadium (the home of the MSU football team) to watch the MSU Spartans and the U-M Wolverines skate to a 3–3 tie. The Heritage Classic was an outdoor ice hockey game played on November 22, 2003, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens. It was the first National Hockey League (NHL) game to be played outdoors as a part of regular season play. The Heritage Classic concept was modeled after the success of the " Cold War" game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University in 2001. André Savard
Joseph André Denis Savard (born February 9, 1953) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey center. He featured in the 1974 Stanley Cup Final with the Boston Bruins. Playing career Savard played 790 National Hockey League games for Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres and Quebec Nordiques. He was drafted sixth overall in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft by the Boston Bruins. He tallied 482 points (211 goals, 271 assists) during his career. He served as head coach of the Quebec Nordiques. Savard was also a scout for the Ottawa Senators from 1994–1999 before being named an assistant coach for Ottawa. He was the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens from November 20, 2000, until the end of the 2002–2003 regular season when he stepped aside to allow Bob Gainey to become general manager.
