High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. The high jump was among the first events deemed acceptable for women, having been held at the 1928 Olympic Games. Juana Arrendel
Juana Rosario Arrendel (born 16 June 1978 in La Romana) is a female high jumper from the Dominican Republic. Arrendel originally won the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, but lost the gold medal after testing positive for stanozolol. In 2006, she became the sixth woman to win three Central American and Caribbean Games titles in a row. The other are Miguelina Cobián, Carmen Romero, Bárbara Hechevarría, María Caridad Colón and Letitia Vriesde. Her personal best jump is 1.97 metres, achieved in December 2002 at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador. Anne Gerd Eieland
Anne Gerd Eieland (born 28 December 1982) from Iveland, Aust-Agder is Norway's third best female high jumper of all time, behind Hanne Haugland and Tonje Angelsen. Eieland was undefeated in Norwegian competition from 2001 to 2005. She was brought up in her teenage years by Torstein Bærheim, who was her trainer for many years, and who took Eieland to record level in 2003. She later found a new trainer, and in winter 2006, Hanne Haugland came in as Eieland's new mentor. Eieland's first major senior championship was the 2003 World Championships in Paris. Solange Marilú Witteveen (born 6 February 1976) is a retired Argentine high jumper. She won a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. She also represented Argentina at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Career Witteveen was born in Buenos Aires. Her personal best jump is 1.96 metres, achieved in September 1997 in Oristano. This is the current South American record. Among her achievements, Witteveen won the 1997 South American Championships, the 1998 South American Games and the 1999 Pan American Games, as well as winning a bronze medal at the 1999 Summer Universiade. Antonella Bevilacqua
Antonella Bevilacqua (born 15 October 1971 in Foggia) is an Italian high jumper, whose personal best jump was 1.98 metres, achieved in May 1996 in Milan. Biography In 1996 Bevilacqua tested positive for the prohibited substances ephedrine and pseudoephedrine twice during the same month. The IAAF decided to put the case to arbitration and allowed Bevilaqua to compete at that year's Olympics where she cleared 1.99m to finish 4th. However, after the games it was decided that a doping offence had been committed and her Olympic result was annulled. The athlete was however only disqualified for three months and was able to return to competitions already with the beginning of the 1997 indoor season in which she immediately won the national title. Inha Babakova (née Butkus, born 26 June 1967) is a former high jumper who represented the Soviet Union and later Ukraine. She was born in Asgabat, Turkmen SSR. Her personal best is 2.05 metres. Oana Manuela Pantelimon, née Musunoiu (born 27 September 1972 in Tecuci) is a Romanian high jumper. At the 2000 Olympic Games Pantelimon ended in third place, tied with Kajsa Bergqvist of Sweden. As the two athletes had an identical jumping record, with perfect attempts up to 1.99 where both had one foul, they shared the bronze medal.Note: ThOfficial Report of the XXVII Olympiad(page 447 of 548) erroneously lists her place as fourth.
