2003 New York City Marathon
The 2003 New York City Marathon was the 34th running of the annual marathon race in New York City, United States, which took place on Sunday, November 2. The men's elite race was won by Kenya's Martin Lel in a time of 2:10:30 hours while the women's race was won in 2:22:31 by Margaret Okayo, also of Kenya. In the wheelchair races, South Africa's Krige Schabort (1:32:19) and America's Cheri Blauwet (1:59:30) won the men's and women's divisions, respectively. Augustus Mbusya Kavutu (born December 31, 1977) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and marathoner who has won several long-distance races and finished in the top ten of multiple international marathons. He ran one of the fastest half-marathons in the world in 2003, clocking 1:01:19. Running career Kavutu ran his first marathon on June 12, 1999, in Stockholm. In Sweden, he also ran several races on the track. In 2002, he ran a 13:50 5,000 meters and 28:23.51 10,000 meters. He built his early career winning many races in Scandinavia, where he was living. Gert Thys (born 12 November 1971) is a male long-distance runner from South Africa, who represented his native country in the marathon at the 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics. Thys is a former List of African records in athletics, African record holder in the marathon, and is the current holder of the List of South African records in athletics, South African record with his best of 2:06:33 from the 1999 Tokyo International Marathon, which was also the course record for that race. Raymond Kipkoech (born 29 April 1978) is a Kenyan marathon runner who won the 2002 Berlin Marathon. He also won the 2004 Venice Marathon, the 2005 Xiamen International Marathon, and the 2011 Jerusalem Marathon. Personal life Kipkoech is from Kapsait, a Kenyan village at an elevation of around close to Uganda. He has two brothers and three sisters. He is the cousin of fellow Kenyan marathon runner Eric Kimaiyo. Career Kipkoech started running professionally in 2000. Timothy Cherigat (born December 29, 1976, in Chepkorio) is a long-distance runner from Kenya, who was the winner of the 108th Boston Marathon held in 2004. Cherigat won this race in a time of 2:10:37 on an abnormally warm day during which temperatures reached as high as 87 °F (30 °C). Other Notable Races In addition to his Boston victory, Cherigat has a personal best of 2:09:34, which he attained while winning the San Sebastian Marathon in 2002. He also placed 3rd at the New York City Marathon in 2004.
