2003 Cannes Film Festival
The 56th Cannes Film Festival started on 14 May and ran until 25 May 2003. French opera and theatre director, filmmaker, actor and producer Patrice Chéreau was the President of the Jury. The Palme d'Or went to the American film ''Elephant'' by Gus Van Sant based on the Columbine High School massacre. The festival opened with ''Fanfan la Tulipe'', directed by Gérard Krawczyk and closed with '' Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin'', directed by Richard Schickel. Monica Bellucci was the mistress of ceremonies. Jenny Holzer
Jenny Holzer (born July 29, 1950) is an American neo-conceptual artist, based in Hoosick, New York. The main focus of her work is the delivery of words and ideas in public spaces and includes large-scale installations, advertising billboards, projections on buildings and other structures, and illuminated electronic displays. Abderrahmane Sissako
Abderrahmane Sissako (born 13 October 1961) is a Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer. His film '' Waiting for Happiness'' (''Heremakono'') was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival official selection under Un Certain Regard, winning a FIPRESCI Prize. His 2006 film ''Bamako'' received much attention. Sissako's themes include globalisation, exile and the displacement of people. Jiang Wen (born 5 January 1963) is a Chinese actor, screenwriter, and director. As a director, he is sometimes grouped with the "Sixth Generation" that emerged in the 1990s. Danis Tanović (born 20 February 1969) is a Bosnian film director and screenwriter.
