It was the fourth official edition of this event, after ten unofficial championships (1987–1996) all held in Rio de Janeiro. Swatch FIVB World Championships
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships is the double-gender world championship for the sport of beach volleyball organized by the ' (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB) the sport's global governing body. The first official edition of the event was held in Los Angeles, California, Los Angeles, United States in 1997 and tournaments had been awarded every two years since then. Before 1997, ten unofficial championships not organized by the FIVB were all held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1987 and 1996. Mark Williams (volleyball)
Mark Williams (born 27 March 1979) is an Australian-born American volleyball and beach volleyball player. Williams was born in Sydney but moved to the United States when he was nine years old. In 1999, while he was at UCLA, Williams trained with the Australian national indoor team. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, was a libero of the squad which placed eighth among 12 participating teams. In 1998 he made his debut in beach volleyball with Larry Witt where they competed in Hermosa Beach. After graduating in 2001, he played in five AVP events that year with several partners. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Williams qualified for the beach volleyball tournament alongside Julien Prosser after competing in the FIVB Tour during the 2003 season. Kevin Kahn Wong (born September 12, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a retired professional beach volleyball player. He currently lives in Hawaii and runs a volleyball training program for youth. Personal life Wong graduated from the Punahou School. He then attended UCLA and received his degree in economics in 1995. Wong was named to People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" issue in 2000. He was honored by the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California in "Celebrating Chinese Americans in Sports", May 2009. He served as a beach volleyball analyst for NBC Sports at the Summer Olympics of 2012 and 2016 and continues to work on all of NBC's coverage. Eric Fonoimoana (born June 7, 1969) is an American former beach volleyball player of Samoan descent who paired with Dain Blanton to win the gold medal in beach volleyball at the 2000 Olympic Games. He has played professionally for more than 16 years and has entered over 200 tournaments. Fonoimoana won at least one tournament for seven straight years between 1998 and 2004.
