Bayer 04 Leverkusen had a shocking season, in which it went from being in the final of the UEFA Champions League the previous season, to finish 15th in Bundesliga, only just escaping relegation to the second tier. It also went out of the Champions League in the second group stage, not even clinching a single point. Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, also known as Bayer 04 Leverkusen (), Bayer Leverkusen, or simply Leverkusen, is a professional football club based in Leverkusen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Christoph Preuß
Christoph Preuß (born 4 July 1981) is a German former professional footballer who played as a defender or defensive midfielder. Career Preuß was born in Gießen, Hesse, and raised in the Hessian town of Linden. He played for local side TSV Großen-Linden, before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2005–06 season. In the 2006–07 campaign he was injured for almost the whole first half of the season. On 17 March 2007, he secured a 1–0 victory against Bayern Munich with a spectacular bicycle kick goal which earned Preuß the Goal of the Month award and finished second in the Goal of the Year poll. Yıldıray Baştürk (, born 24 December 1978) is a retired professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. Born in Germany, he was capped 49 times for the Turkey national football team, representing the team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup where it finished in third place. In the same year he also appeared for Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 UEFA Champions League Final. Ulf Kirsten (born 4 December 1965) is a German former professional footballer who played as a striker. Nicknamed ''Der Schwatte'' (dialect for ''Der Schwarze'', 'The Black One'), he is the first player in history to reach a total 100 caps playing with two different national teams (first for East Germany, then Reunified Germany). Jan Šimák (born 13 October 1978) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He spent most of his career in Germany while making one appearance for the Czech Republic national team. As a player, he was well known for his powerful shot and goalscoring from midfield. Boris Živković (; born 15 November 1975) is a Croatian former professional footballer who played as a full-back and centre-back. At one point of his career he even played as defensive midfielder.
