Atlético de Madrid returned to La Liga following a two-year absence, having a safe ride in the midfield under Luis Aragonés. The season marked the breakthrough of Fernando Torres, the striker making his La Liga debut by the start of the season, scoring 13 league goals as a teenager. Demetrio Albertini was a key signing before the season, the experienced Italian providing a solid display before departing for Lazio in his home country. Santiago Denia
Santiago Denia Sánchez (born 9 March 1974), commonly known as Santi, is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a central defender, currently manager of the Spain under-21 national team. He appeared in 297 La Liga matches over 11 seasons (two goals scored), with Albacete and Atlético Madrid. He won the 1996 league championship with the latter club. Club career Born in Albacete, Castile-La Mancha, Santi began playing professionally with his hometown side Albacete Balompié. He made his La Liga debut at age 18, and immediately became an undisputed starter as they constantly managed to retain their top-flight status. Santi signed for Atlético Madrid in the summer of 1995, being crowned league and Copa del Rey champion in his first season as part of a defensive line which also included youth graduates Juan Manuel López and Roberto Solozábal. He appeared in 37 league matches during the campaign.

Daniel da Cruz Carvalho (born 2 November 1976), commonly known as Dani, is a Portuguese retired footballer who played mainly as an attacking midfielder. He spent most of his eight-year professional career with Ajax after starting out at Sporting CP, appearing in nearly 100 competitive matches and winning three major titles. Jorge Larena-Avellaneda Roig (born 29 September 1981), known as Larena, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played usually as an attacking midfielder. He played 193 La Liga matches over seven seasons (15 goals), in representation of three teams, mainly Las Palmas for which he also appeared in Segunda División. Jovan Stanković (; born 4 March 1971) is a Serbian retired football manager and former player who played as a left midfielder. He spent the better part of his career with Red Star Belgrade and in Spain, most notably with Mallorca – he played a full decade in the latter country, also representing two other clubs.
