2002 Volta A Catalunya
The 2002 Volta a Catalunya was the 82nd edition of the Volta a Catalunya cycle race and was held from 17 June to 23 June 2002. The race started in Sant Jaume d'Enveja and finished in Barcelona. The race was won by Roberto Heras of the U.S. Postal Service team. Roberto Heras
Roberto Heras Hernández (born 1 February 1974) is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer who won the Vuelta a España a record four times. Between 1997 and 2005 he finished in the top 5 of the Vuelta every year except 1998 when he finished 6th. He won a record-tying three times, and then broke the record with a fourth win in 2005, but he was eventually disqualified after being accused of taking EPO. Heras chose to fight the accusations and this resulted in a lengthy court case and appeal process. In June 2011, Heras successfully appealed against the disqualification in the civil court of Castilla y León, and this decision was upheld in the Spanish supreme court in December 2012. Danilo Hondo
Danilo Hondo (born 4 January 1974) is a German former professional road bicycle racer. He won the German National Road Race in 2002. He competed in the men's team pursuit at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He was banned from professional cycling and then later won his appeal to return to the sport. From January 2015 to May 2019, Hondo worked as a coach for the Swiss cycling federation, first for the under-23 squad and then with the elite. He owns a bike shop on the island of Majorca. Hondo was born in Guben, Brandenburg. Doping In 2005 Hondo was suspended and fired after testing positive for carphedon at the 2005 Vuelta a Murcia. Originally suspended for two years, Hondo's suspension was cut to 1 year in June 2005. Fernando Escartín
Fernando Escartín Coti (born 24 January 1968) is a Spanish former road racing cyclist. Between 1995 and 2000 he came in the top 10 of the Tour de France five times and in that same time period finished on the podium in 2nd place at the Vuelta a España, twice. Biography Escartín was born in Biescas, Aragon. Tour de France Escartín won a stage and finished third overall in the 1999 Tour de France. Of the cyclists who finished on the podium in the era in which Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times (1999–2005), Escartín is the sole rider not to be implicated in a doping scandal. Mikel Zarrabeitia Uranga (born May 14, 1970 in Abadiño) is a Spanish former road bicycle racer. In the 11th stage of the 2000 Vuelta a España, Zarrabeitia cut off the top of his finger. He was trying to repair his distance counter during the descent from Alt de la Rabassa when the accident happened. Dmitry Fofonov
Dmitry Fofonov ( kk, Дмитрий Фофонов; born 15 August 1976 in Almaty) is a former Kazakh professional road bicycle racer who was fired from UCI ProTeam Crédit Agricole for doping. Fofonov tested positive for heptaminol after the 18th stage of the 2008 Tour de France. Fofonov had completed the race in 19th place, and was fired by Crédit Agricole after the test. After his doping ban ended, Fofonov joined the team for the 2010 season. He retired after the 2012 season and became an assistant sporting director for Astana. Tom Steels
Tom Steels (born 2 September 1971) is a Belgian former professional road bicycle racer, specialising in sprint finishes and one-day races. He was one of the top sprinters in the peloton. Steels competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, in the Men's 1000 metres Time Trial, finishing 19th. Steels began his professional cycling career in 1994 with the Vlaanderen 2002 team, winning eight times in his first two seasons. His breakthrough was after he signed with Mapei in 1996. That year he won Omloop Het Volk, and Gent–Wevelgem. In 1997, he rode in his first Tour de France, and looked capable of a stage win after coming second on Stage 2. However, during the sprint for the finish for the sixth stage he found himself blocked and boxed in by other sprinters and in frustration threw his water bottle at another rider, an offence for which he was disqualified from that year's Tour. Vallnord
Vallnord () is a ski/snowboard resort in the Pyrenees mountains in the country of Andorra, close to the border with Spain at Tor, Pallars. Overview It encompasses the linked sectors of Pal and Arinsal (the sectors were linked by a cable car, opened in 2005, from the top of the Arinsal sector) and the Ordino-Arcalis sector some kilometres away. An individual time trial (ITT) is a road bicycle race in which cyclists race alone against the clock (in French: ''contre la montre'' – literally "against the watch", in Italian: ''tappa a cronometro'' "stopwatch stage").
