2002 New Orleans Saints Season
The 2002 season was the New Orleans Saints' 36th in the National Football League and their 27th playing home games at the Louisiana Superdome. They improved upon their previous season's performance of 7–9, winning nine games. Despite the winning season, and ranking third in total offense in 2002, the team failed to qualify for the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. As of 2022, this remains the only season in which the Saints have worn their gold jerseys. A bright moment during the season for the Saints was sweeping eventual champion Tampa Bay. Those two wins were almost guaranteed to make New Orleans a playoff team; however, three consecutive losses, all to losing teams, including one to the 1–13 Cincinnati Bengals, knocked New Orleans out of playoff contention. NFC South
The National Football Conference – Southern Division or NFC South is one of the four Division (sport), divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It was created prior to the 2002 NFL season, when the league realigned divisions after expanding to 32 teams. The NFC South currently has four member clubs: the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to the 2002 season, the Buccaneers belonged to the AFC West () and NFC North, NFC Central (–), while the other three teams were part of the geographically inaccurate NFC West. David Sloan (American Football)
David Lyle Sloan (born June 8, 1972) is an American former professional football player who was a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints. He is currently the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for Rice University. Early playing career Sloan initially bypassed football for basketball, enrolling at Fresno City College, a junior college in Fresno, California. He played basketball for the Rams as a freshman and sophomore, earning All-Conference academic honors both years. Sloan then transferred to the University of New Mexico, where he played college football during his junior and senior years for Lobos head coach Dennis Franchione. Charles Grant (American Football)
Charles Gabriel Grant (born September 3, 1978) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Georgia. Grant was also a member of the Miami Dolphins, Omaha Nighthawks and Chicago Bears. 2001 Tennessee Volunteers Football Team
The 2001 Tennessee Volunteers football team represented the University of Tennessee in the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was coached by Phillip Fulmer. The Vols played their home games in Neyland Stadium and competed in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Vols finished the season 10–2, 7–1 in SEC play and won the Florida Citrus Bowl, 45–17, over Michigan. Donté Lamar Stallworth (born November 10, 1980) is a former American football wide receiver who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Tennessee and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Daryl Lamon Terrell (born January 25, 1975) is a former American football offensive lineman in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Redskins. Dale Lavelle Carter (born November 28, 1969) is a former American football cornerback in the National Football League. He played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and Baltimore Ravens. Professional career Carter was drafted as a cornerback by the Chiefs in the 1992 NFL Draft out of the University of Tennessee. In 1992, Carter was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. On Thanksgiving Day (November 23, 1995), Carter was ejected for kicking Michael Irvin of the Dallas Cowboys in a 24-12 loss at Texas Stadium. After six seasons in Kansas City in which he shined on the field, but had numerous off-the-field problems, Carter signed a four-year, $22.8 million contract with the Broncos in 1999, making him the NFL's highest-paid defensive back. Joe Johnson (defensive End)
Joseph T. Johnson (born July 11, 1972) is a former American football defensive end in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers. In the 1994 NFL draft, he was selected by the Saints in the first round (13th overall). He was elected to the Pro Bowl after the 1998 season, missed the entire 1999 season with a severe knee injury that left his career in doubt, but came back in 2000 to once again be named to the Pro Bowl and also named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Willie Jake Reed (born September 28, 1967) is a former professional American football player who played for 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) as a wide receiver from 1991 to 2002 for the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints.
