2002 Melbourne Cup
The 2002 Melbourne Cup was the 142nd running of the Melbourne Cup, a prestigious Australian Thoroughbred horse race. The race, run over , was held on 5 November 2002 at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. It was won by Media Puzzle, trained by Dermot Weld and ridden by Damien Oliver. A week before the race Damien's older brother Jason, who was also a jockey was killed from severe head injuries suffered after a fall during a trail the day before at Belmont Park Racecourse in Perth. Melbourne Cup
The Melbourne Cup is a Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne, Australia. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3:00 pm on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as "the race that stops the nation". The Melbourne Cup has a long tradition, with the first race held in 1861. It was originally run over but was shortened to in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. Glen Boss (born 21 August 1969 in Caboolture) is an Australian jockey, who is best known for riding Makybe Diva to victory in three consecutive Melbourne Cups: 2003, 2004, and 2005. Daliapour
Daliapour (10 March 1996 – August 2015) is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from July 1998 until November 2002 he competed in seven different countries, running 26 times and winning seven races. The horse was bred by Aga Khan IV who owned him before selling him to Robert Ng in late 2000. He was originally trained by Luca Cumani before moving to Michael Stoute's stable in 2000. He was trained in Hong Kong by Ivan Allan for a few months in early 2001 before returning to Stoute for the remainder of his racing career. Daliapour showed promise as a two-year-old by winning the Autumn Stakes and was a top-class performer at three, winning the Blue Riband Trial Stakes and finishing second in both The Derby and the Irish Derby. Chris Munce
Chris Munce (born 17 May 1969) is a highly successful Thoroughbred horse racing jockey, having won both the Melbourne Cup and the Cox Plate. He is now a highly successful trainer of horses in Brisbane Queensland heading up a family based operation which is most notable for promoting the joy and love of the thoroughbred. Michael Rodd (born 19 January 1982 in Manly, New South Wales) is an Australian jockey who is best known for riding Efficient (horse), Efficient to victory in the 2007 Melbourne Cup. Rodd has also been successful in the 2008 Cox Plate, riding Maldivian and in the 2006 Victoria Derby, again riding Efficient. He began racing in 2000. Murray Baker
Murray Baker (born 21 April 1946) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse trainer and former New Zealand cricketer. Cricket Baker played in one List A and seventeen first-class matches for Central Districts and Northern Districts from 1966 to 1975. Baker was part of the team who won the Plunket Shield and played for Huddersfield in England. Horse training Baker started training at Woodville in the 1970s. His first raceday winner was Vizier on October 4 1978, at Otaki. Another early winner was Sir Vigilant in the 1985 New Zealand St. Leger. In 2000 Murray moved his training operation to Cambridge. Noel Harris
Noel Harris, also known as "Harry" or "NGH", is a former jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. He is notable for having ridden 2,167 raceday winners in New Zealand which is the fourth highest total behind Chris Johnson, David Walsh and Lance O'Sullivan and he has won the jockeys' premiership in both New Zealand and Singapore. In 2018 Harris was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Riding career Noel Harris was apprenticed at Woodville to his father, John William (Jock) Harris who was a leading jockey both on the flat and over jumps before becoming a horse trainer. Noel rode his first winner at Foxton on 16 May 1970 and took out the 1971–72 apprentice jockeys' premiership at 18-years-old before sharing the national jockeys' premiership with David Peake the following year. Hail (horse)
Hail (foaled 27 September 1997) is a thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 2000, ridden by Noel Harris. He was bred by Waikanae couple Barry and Hazel Clevely from Valley Court (NZ) (Pompeii Court). Hail was owned by trainer Bruce Marsh and Alistair Cunningham after being purchased as a yearling for $17,000 at the Karaka sales. In seven years of racing, Hail established for himself a reputation of reliability, strength and durability. Although he only won two Group 1 races, he finished in the first four in a further eight, including a fourth in the Wellington Cup under topweight. He also won the 2002 New Zealand St. Leger over 2500m at Trentham Racecourse. Jim Cassidy (born 21 January 1963), often referred to as "Jimmy" is a retired New Zealand jockey who has been inducted in both the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Jimmy's career and life Jim Cassidy was one of seven children of Arthur "Blue" and Francie Cassidy of Wellington, New Zealand. Cassidy initially rode in New Zealand with Pat Campbell in the Hawkes Bay, having over 500 winners in his country of birth. He achieved even greater success in Australia. Craig Newitt (born 1984 or 1985) is an Australian jockey who rides mostly in Victoria. Newitt was born in Tasmania, the son of two jockeys. James Bartholomew Cummings (14 November 1927 – 30 August 2015), also known by his initials J. B. Cummings, was one of the most successful Australian racehorse trainers. Darren Gauci
Darren Gauci (born 26 December 1965, in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian jockey. Racing career Gauci was one of Australia's most successful and durable jockeys. He won the Senior Victorian Jockeys Premiership in 1983–84, 1985–86 and 1990–91.
