2002 Lima Bombing
The 2002 Lima bombing was a car bomb attack in Lima, Peru that occurred just outside the Embassy of the United States, Lima, embassy of the United States, killing nine people and injuring thirty-two. The blast came just three days prior to a visit to Peru from the United States President George W. Bush. No Americans were caught in the explosion. An estimated of explosives was used in the attack. Attack The bomb was planted at a mall four blocks from the American embassy. A seven-floor hotel and a branch of the Banco de Crédito del Perú bank were damaged, but the embassy compound itself, sitting behind a 20 ft high wall and distant from the street, received no apparent damage. Santiago de Surco, commonly known simply as Surco, is a district of Lima, Peru. It is bordered on the north with the district of Ate Vitarte and La Molina; on the east with San Juan de Miraflores, on the west with San Borja, Surquillo, Miraflores and Barranco, and on the south with Chorrillos. Due to its relatively large area, it is a very heterogeneous district, having inhabitants belonging to all socio-economic levels. Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement
The Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement ( es, Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru, abbreviated MRTA) was a Peruvian Marxism-Leninism, Marxist-Leninist Guerrilla warfare, guerrilla group which started in the early 1980s. Their self-declared goal was to demonstrate to leftist groups in Peru that sought change through the current government the viability of radical revolution. The MRTA also aimed to provide an alternative to another militant group, the Shining Path, which placed them in direct competition. The group was led by Víctor Polay, Víctor Polay Campos until he was sentenced to 32 years' imprisonment in 1992 and by Néstor Cerpa Cartolini ("Comrade Evaristo") until his death in 1997. The internal conflict in Peru is an ongoing armed conflict between the Government of Peru and the Marxism–Leninism–Maoism, Maoist guerilla group Shining Path. The conflict began on 17 May 1980, and from 1982 to 1997 the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement waged its own insurgency as a Marxist–Leninist rival to the Shining Path. It is estimated that there have been between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths, making it the bloodiest war in History of Peru, Peruvian history, since the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, European colonization of the country. The high death toll includes many civilian casualties, due to deliberate targeting by many factions.
