2002 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships
The 2002 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships were held in Bourg St.-Maurice, France under the auspices of International Canoe Federation for the record-tying third time. It was the 27th edition. Bourg St.-Maurice hosted the championships previously in 1969 and 1987, and matches the times hosted by Spittal, Austria (1963, 1965, 1977) and Meran, Italy (1953, 1971, 1983). Beginning at these championships, this event would be held on an annual basis in non- Summer Olympic years. Ducktown, Tennessee
Ducktown ( chr, ᎦᏬᏅᏱ, translit=Gawonvyi) is a city in Polk County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 461 at the 2020 census and 475 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Ducktown is located in a geological region known as the Copper Basin, and was the center of a major copper-mining district from 1847 until 1987. The district also produced iron, sulfur and zinc as byproducts. Ducktown was the birthplace of Rockabilly Hall of Famer, Stan Beaver. Literary historian Ben Harris McClary suggests that a Ducktown-area farmer named William "Sut" Miller (d. 1858) was the inspiration for the George Washington Harris character, Sut Lovingood. Stefan Pfannmöller (born 4 December 1980, in Halle an der Saale) is a German slalom canoeist who competed at the international level from 1997 to 2007. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the C1 event in Athens in 2004. Pfannmöller also won five medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold (C1 team: 2006), three silvers (C1 team: 1999, 2002, 2005), and a bronze (C1: 2003). Sören Kaufmann (born 8 May 1971 in Augsburg) is a German slalom canoeist who competed from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s (decade). He won four medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold (C1 team: 1995), two silvers (C1: 1995, C1 team: 2002), and a bronze (C1: 1993). Stanislav Ježek (; born 21 November 1976 in Prague) is a Czech slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 1994. He won eight medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold (C1 team: 2002), a silver (C1 team: 2006), and six bronzes (C1: 2006, C1 team: 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011). He is the overall World Cup champion in C1 from 1999 and 2011. He also won a total of 7 medals at the European Championships (1 gold, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes). Patrice Estanguet (born 19 April 1973 in Pau) is a French slalom canoeist who competed at the international level from 1990 to 2004. He is the older brother of triple Olympic champion Tony Estanguet. Jan Benzien
Jan Benzien (born 22 July 1982) is a German slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 1999. Benzien started out as a C1 paddler. Since 2012 he has also been competing in C2, teaming up with Franz Anton. He won eleven medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with two golds (C1 team: 2006, C2: 2015), eight silvers (C1: 2002; C1 team: 2002, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013; C2 team: 2015), and a bronze (C1: 2009). He won additional 16 medals at the European Championships (3 golds, 7 silvers, and 6 bronzes). Benzien competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Michal Martikán
Michal Martikán (; born 18 May 1979) is a Slovak slalom canoeist who has been competing at the international level since 1994. In 1996 he became the first athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. In total he won 5 Olympic medals (2 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze), which is the most among all slalom paddlers. He has also won the World Championship title in the C1 individual category four times. Career At the age of 16, Michal Martikán became the youngest winner of a World Cup slalom canoeing event.
