2002 Greek Local Elections
The 2002 Greek local elections elected representatives to Greece's super-prefectures, 54 prefectures, provinces, and approximately 1,033 communities and municipalities. The local elections in Greece traditionally occur during the month of October. Candidates at local elections do not run under the official name of the party they belong, but form electoral platforms with different names for the purpose. Municipality of Athens Dora Bakoyannis, a prominent member of New Democracy, won the election and replaced Dimitris Avramopoulos as mayor of Athens (first term). Synaspismos
The Coalition of the Left, of Movements and Ecology ( el, Συνασπισμός της Αριστεράς των Κινημάτων και της Οικολογίας, ''Synaspismós tīs Aristerás tōn Kinīmátōn kai tīs Oikologías''), commonly known as Synaspismos ( el, Συνασπισμός, ''Synaspismós'', "Coalition") and abbreviated to SYN (ΣΥΝ), was a Greek political party of the radical New Left. Thodoris Dritsas
Thodoris Dritsas ( el, Θοδωρής Δρίτσας; born 23 August 1947) is a Greek politician of the Syriza party who has served as the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy and Alternate Minister for Shipping and the Aegean. Early life Dritsas was born in Piraeus in 1947. He reached the graduate year in Law studies at the University of Athens. In 1972, he joined the pharmacy family business as a partner owner. During the 21 April military dictatorship, Dritsas was active in anti-government agitation. After democracy was restored in 1975, he was active in the Organisation Socialist Revolution extra-parliamentary organization. In 2004, he represented his organization in the formation of the Coalition of the Radical Left that became known by its initials in Greek, "Syriza." The Radical Left Front (, ''Metopo Rizospastikis Aristeras'', MERA) was a coalition of far-left political parties in Greece. The Radical Left Front was founded in 1999 by New Left Current (NAR), the Maoist Revolutionary Communist Movement of Greece (EKKE), the Trotskyist Workers Revolutionary Party (EEK), Youth of Communist Liberation (NKA), Independent Communist Organization of Serres (AKOS) and independent left activists. Hellenic Front
The Hellenic Front ( el, Ελληνικό Μέτωπο) was a Greek political party with an ultranationalist platform, founded in 1994. Its declared ''raison d'être'' was to raise national conscience and inspire freedom, creativity, and development by reversing what it sees as dependence on foreign economies and ideas. It advocated creation of a “National Opposition Front” to build an effective and credible alternative to the current two-party system. On social matters, the party has supported populist policies such as the re-introduction of the death penalty (long abolished in Greece), specifically as a sentence for drug dealers. Mavroudis (Makis) Voridis ( el, Μαυρουδής (Μάκης) Χρήστου Βορίδης) (born 23 August 1964) is a Greek politician and lawyer. His previous and current involvement with far-right rhetoric and past association with dictator Georgios Papadopoulos has made him a controversial figure in Greek politics. A member of the Hellenic Parliament for New Democracy since 2012, he currently serves as the Minister for the Interior in the Cabinet of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Greek Ecologists
The Greek Ecologists ( el, Έλληνες Οικολόγοι, translit=Ellines Ιkoloyi) (previously Union of Ecologists, el, Ένωση Οικολόγων, translit=Enosi Ιkoloyon) is a Greek "fringe" and "bizarre ecological party". The party's president is Dimosthenis Vergis, a former auto-worker, trade unionist, journalist, and peace activist. Vergis has been described as a "self-styled ecologist" and "a self-styled, modern-day Dionysus – God of wine, revelry and fertility". Vergis usually deploys naked female party workers in his campaigns and has posed nude for campaign posters and pamphlets, flirting "with any female journalist that comes within groping distance". He supports the legalisation of cannabis and unrestricted nudism. The Greek Ecologists and its leader are not accepted as a Green party by the Ecologist Greens, which enjoys international recognition as Greece's green party.
