2002 French Open
The 2002 French Open was the second Grand Slam event of 2002 and the 106th edition of the French Open. It took place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from late May through early June, 2002. Both Gustavo Kuerten and Jennifer Capriati were unsuccessful in defending their 2001 titles; Kuerten was defeated in the fourth round by eventual champion Albert Costa, and Capriati was defeated by eventual champion Serena Williams in the semi-finals. Costa won his only Grand Slam title, defeating compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final. Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus to win her second Grand Slam title, her first French Open title, and the first of four consecutive Grand Slams in what was to be called the "Serena Slam". Juan Antonio Marín Casero (born 2 March 1975) is a former professional male tennis player from Costa Rica. He originally played on tour under the Spanish flag, as he was born to a father from Murcia and a mother from Asturias, and lived in Spain since the age of 14. Renzo Furlan (born 17 May 1970) is a former tennis player from Italy. Having turned professional in 1988, Furlan represented his native country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was defeated in the quarter finals by India's Leander Paes. Željko Krajan (;; born 3 February 1979) is a Croatian tennis coach and former professional player. Playing career Krajan, a native of Varaždin, began playing tennis at age six.. Ricardo Mello (born 21 December 1980) is a Brazilian retired tennis player. His preference is for clay courts. He has had the occasional win in hard court tournaments. Alexander Popp (born 4 November 1976) is a former German professional tennis player. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2000 and 2003.
