2001–02 Football League Trophy
The Football League Trophy 2001–02, known as the LDV Vans Trophy 2001–02 for sponsorship reasons, was the 19th staging of the Football League Trophy, a knock-out competition for English football clubs in Second, Third Division and the Conference. The winners were Blackpool and the runners-up were Cambridge United. The competition began on 15 October 2001 and ended with the final on 24 March 2002 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. In the first round, there were two sections: North and South. In the following rounds each section gradually eliminates teams in knock-out fashion until each has a winning finalist. At this point, the two winning finalists face each other in the combined final for the honour of the trophy. Paul Wanless
Paul Steven Wanless (born 14 December 1973) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League as a midfielder for Oxford United, Lincoln City and Cambridge United. Playing career Wanless was born in Banbury. He began his career as a trainee at Oxford United, coming through the ranks to make a handful of first team appearances before moving to Lincoln City in 1995 on a free transfer. His chances with Lincoln were limited and he spent some time out on loan at non-league side Woking. Wanless then left Lincoln and moved to Cambridge United, where he made nearly 350 appearances in all competitions over a seven-year period and became club captain. Richard Walker (footballer Born 1977)
Richard Martin Walker (born 8 November 1977) is an English former footballer who played as a forward for Devon and Exeter League club Beer Albion. Career Early career Walker started his career at Aston Villa in 1997. Here, he scored a goal against Arsenal, one of the highest points of his Villa career. Graham Fenton
Graham Anthony Fenton (born 22 May 1974) is an English football manager and former professional footballer who is the current manager of Blyth Spartans. He played as a striker in the Premier League for Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City, as well as in the Football League for West Bromwich Albion, Walsall, Stoke City, Blackpool and Darlington. He also spent a year in Scotland with St Mirren before later playing for Non-league Blyth Spartans. He was capped once by England at under-21 level. Paul David Simpson (born 26 July 1966) is an English former professional footballer who is currently manager of Carlisle United. He has been a coach and manager at several English clubs and was manager of the England team that won the FIFA Under-20s World Cup in South Korea in 2017. Playing career Manchester City Simpson began his playing career as a schoolboy at Manchester City in the early 1980s. Ian Hughes (born 2 August 1974) is a Welsh former professional footballer. He played as a defender and was a Welsh under-21 international. Playing career Club career Born in Bangor, Gwynedd, Hughes began his career at Bury where he was in the youth team. James Pullen
James Daniel Pullen (born 18 March 1982) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Born in Chelmsford, Pullen started his career at Heybridge Swifts. On 29 September 1999 he joined Ipswich Town on a free transfer. He made his debut in a 3–1 win against Middlesbrough in the Football League Cup on 6 November 2002. Martin Bullock
Martin John Bullock (born 5 March 1975) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He is a Football Development Officer at Northern Football Federation. He previously played for five league teams over fifteen years, making 452 league appearances. He also won a cap for the England under-21 side in 1996. He began his career at non-League Eastwood Town, before earning a move to Barnsley in 1993. Lee Collins (born 3 February 1974 in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire) is a Scottish former professional footballer. Collins began his professional career in his native land with Albion Rovers. After two years, 45 league appearances, and one goal for the club, he moved south of the border to join English club Swindon Town. He remained at the County Ground for five years, making 64 appearances and scoring two goals. He won the Division Two championship with them in 1995–96. John O'Kane
John Andrew O'Kane (born 15 November 1974) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. He started his career with Manchester United but failed to break into the first team, and after loan spells with Wimbledon, Bury and Bradford City, he made a permanent move to Everton in January 1998. There he found first-team opportunities easier to come by, but a change of manager at the end of the 1997–98 season meant he fell out of favour again and was sent on loan to Burnley at the start of the 1998–99 season. He went on loan again to Bolton Wanderers at the start of 1999–2000, a move that was made permanent a month later.
