2002 Cape Verdean Football Championships
The 2002 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 23rd of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. The competition started on 11 May and finished on 6 July 2002. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting Praia won their fourth title. No club participated in the 2003 CAF Champions League and the 2003 CAF Winners Cup. Overview Onze Unidos was the defending team of the title. A total of 9 clubs, 36 matches were played and 117 goals were scored. It was one of the few seasons that the total number of points would be the champion, it had fewer games compared to other football leagues and this would be the last season to do so. The following season, they used the group system with 4 matches and with playoffs though the semis would be added, also the Santiago and Santo Antão Island Leagues would be split into two and the total number of clubs risen to 11. The Cape Verdean Football Championship or the Campeonato Caboverdiano de Futebol is a football competition that was created in 1976 in Cape Verde. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire. History Before independence The first football championship that was not official took place in 1938 and were colonial and later provincial, only clubs from São Vicente participated, they were actual insular championships. The first official championships began in 1953 and featured clubs from only the islands of São Vicente (along with its surroundings) and Santiago took part. Clube de Futebol Os Sanjoanenses, also known as Sanjoanense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: ''Sanjoanensi'', also in the other Capeverdean Crioulo forms of the Santo Antão and the São Vicente Crioulos) is a football club that currently plays in the Santo Antão Island League South Zone in Cape Verde. Santiago Island League
The Santiago Island League was a regional championship played in all of Santiago Island until 2002 when it was broken up into two present divisions, the North and the South zones, Cape Verde. It formed a part of the Santiago Regional Football Association (''Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago, ARFS'') The winner of the championship had played in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The island league was one of the two oldest in Cape Verde. Until the 1960s, the league included clubs from the entire southern portion of Cape Verde and functioned as a regional league. The Sal Premier Division is a regional championship played in Sal Island, Cape Verde. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The Maio Island League is a regional championship played in Maio Island, Cape Verde. The competition is organized by the Maio Regional Football Association (Associação Regional do Maio de Futebol, ARMF). The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. Since 2015, the last place club relegates and Beira-Mar was the first club to be relegated. The Fogo Premier Division is a tier-2 regional championship played in Fogo Island, Cape Verde. The competition are organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol do Fogo, ARFF).
