2002 1000 Guineas
The 2002 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 5 May 2002. It was the 189th running of the 1000 Guineas. The winner was Godolphin's Kazzia, a German-bred brown filly trained at Newmarket, Suffolk by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by Frankie Dettori. Kazzia's victory was the second in the race for her owner, trainer and jockey after the success of Cape Verdi in 1998. Godolphin's leader Sheikh Mohammed had previously won the race with Oh So Sharp in 1985 and Musical Bliss in 1989. Kazzia was the first German-bred horse to win a British Classic. 1000 Guineas Stakes
The 1000 Guineas Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late April or early May on the Sunday following the 2000 Guineas Stakes. It is the second of Britain's five Classic races, and the first of two restricted to fillies. It can also serve as the opening leg of the Fillies' Triple Crown, followed by the Oaks and the St Leger, but the feat of winning all three is rarely attempted. The Prix Marcel Boussac is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to two-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early October. It is France's only Group 1 event exclusively for juvenile fillies. The leading participants usually become major contenders for the following year's fillies' Classics. The Nell Gwyn Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to three-year-old fillies. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket in mid-April. History The event was established in 1961, and it was initially called the Spring Fillies' Stakes. The first running was won by Verbena. The race was renamed the Nell Gwyn Stakes in 1962. It was named after Nell Gwyn (1650–87), a long-time mistress of King Charles II. The Nell Gwyn Stakes can serve as a trial for various fillies' Classics in Europe. The Premio Dormello is a Group 2 flat horse race in Italy open to two-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run at Milan over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. The event is named after Dormello, the stud farm of Federico Tesio. It was given Group 2 status in 1975 and relegated to Group 3 level in 1988 before reclaiming its Group 2 status in 2019. The Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) at Leopardstown in March or April. History The event used to be staged at Phoenix Park under the title 1,000 Guineas Trial. For a period it held Group 3 status. It was downgraded to Listed level in 1987. The 1,000 Guineas Trial was transferred to Leopardstown in 1991. It regained Group 3 status in 2005. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late August or early September. History The event is named after its long-term sponsor, Moyglare Stud. It was formerly contested over 6 furlongs, and for a period it held Group 3 status. It was promoted to Group 2 level in 1979, and to Group 1 in 1983. Its distance was extended to 7 furlongs in 1992. In 2014 it became part of the Irish Champions Weekend fixture. Ballydoyle
Ballydoyle is a racehorse training facility located in County Tipperary in Ireland. It is a sister thoroughbred facility to Coolmore Stud, and both are owned by John Magnier, son in law to the racehorse trainer Vincent O'Brien. The current trainer at Ballydoyle is Aidan O'Brien, who succeeded Vincent O'Brien (no relation) in 1995. The current stable retained jockey is Ryan Moore. History After the 1951 Cheltenham Festival, Vincent O'Brien purchased and moved into Ballydoyle, then a farm ringed by mountains near the village of Rosegreen, County Tipperary. Vincent O'Brien trained such household names as Nijinsky, Ballymoss, Sir Ivor, Roberto, Alleged, The Minstrel, El Gran Senor and Sadler's Wells at Ballydoyle. The Fillies' Mile is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. History The event was established in 1973, and it was originally held at Ascot. It was initially sponsored by the Green Shield catalogue shops and titled the Green Shield Stakes. Gossamer (horse)
Gossamer (foaled 20 February 1999) is a British thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2001 until October 2002 she won four of her eight starts and was one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe at both two and three years of age. As a juvenile she was undefeated in three starts, following up a win in a maiden race with victories in the Group races, Group Three Prestige Stakes and the Group One Fillies' Mile. Despite fears that her diminutive stature made her unlikely to improve as a three-year-old, and a defeat when favourite the 1000 Guineas she recovered to record an emphatic success in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. The best of her three subsequent appearances came when she finished third to the colt (horse), colt Rock of Gibraltar (horse), Rock of Gibraltar in the Prix du Moulin.
