The 2001–02 Powergen Cup was the 31st edition of England's rugby union club competition. London Irish won the competition defeating Northampton Saints in the final. Anglo-Welsh Cup
The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. History Background RFU Knockout Cup From 1971 to 2005, English clubs played in the RFU Knockout Cup. At its formation, it was the highest honour that a club could win, as there were no nationally organised leagues until merit leagues were introduced in 1984, followed by the full national league pyramid in 1987. Eddie Halvey
Eddie Halvey (born 11 August 1970) is a retired Irish rugby union player for Munster, London Irish and Ireland. He played as a flanker. On 12 May 2009 he received a 7-month suspended sentence for causing the death of Kevin Walsh, then 16, in 2006 while driving at over twice the legal limit. Munster Halvey made his debut for Munster against Swansea in November 1995, a game that was also Munster's first ever Heineken Cup appearance. Budge Pountney
Anthony Charles 'Budge' Pountney (born 13 November 1973) is a rugby union coach and retired player. A flanker, he played in the Northampton Saints side that won the 1999–2000 Heineken Cup. Pountney was born in Southampton in England, but had a grandmother from the Channel Islands which made him eligible for any of the British national teams. He won 31 caps for Scotland from 1998 to 2002. He was part of the Scotland team that won the 1999 Five Nations Championship, played in the 1999 World Cup, and later captained the team. After retiring, he was head coach and later director of rugby at Northampton. He later worked in club and school coaching. He is now the development director for Ulster Rugby. Matt Dawson
Matthew James Sutherland Dawson, MBE (born 31 October 1972) is an English retired rugby union player who played scrum half for Northampton Saints and then London Wasps. During his international career he toured with the British & Irish Lions three times and was part of England's 2003 Rugby World Cup winning side. He won 77 caps for his country in total, including nine as captain and was England's most capped scrum half until passed by Danny Care. Dawson was best known for his trademark 'sniping runs' and played the whistle well, often scoring tries from 'tap and go' penalties. When called upon, he could also demonstrate his versatility by kicking goals. John Leslie (rugby Union)
John Andrew Leslie (born 25 November 1970 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand) is a former rugby union footballer who played at centre for Scotland. He is the elder son of Andy Leslie the great All Blacks captain and the brother of Martin Leslie who also played for Scotland. He was educated at St Patrick's College, Silverstream, and completed a BPhEd at the University of Otago in 1994. Leslie played 123 games for Otago and 32 for the Highlanders in the Super 12. He led Otago to the National Provincial Championship title in 1998. In the 1994 South African tour of New Zealand, Otago beat South Africa for the first time to secure the Springbok head. Peter Jorgensen
Peter Jorgensen (born 30 April 1973) is an Australian former rugby union and professional rugby league footballer. Background Jorgensen was educated at Newington College (1980–86) and St. Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. Playing career A rugby union player with the Randwick club, Jorgensen played Test rugby for The Wallabies. Jorgensen switched rugby codes to join the Eastern Suburbs in 1995 where he played on the Wing position. Making his debut in round 13 of the 1995 season, Jorgensen scored eight tries in the remaining ten games of the season. Jorgensen played with the Roosters for a further season, representing City Origin in 1996, before signing with the Penrith Panthers. Craig Moir
Craig Moir (born 25 September 1973 in Aberdeen) is a retired Scottish rugby footballer who played for Northampton Saints and represented Scotland at rugby union. Club career Born in Aberdeen, Moir played for Milford Haven and Llanelli before joining Northampton Saints in 1993, just in time to experience the pain of relegation from the then First Division. the following season saw promotion back to the top division achieved at the first attempt, and Moir was a regular in the Saints side for the remainder of the decade, including the starting line-up for the 2000 Heineken Cup final. After nine years at the Saints, Moir moved to Scotland’s newly formed pro team Border Reivers in 2002. Nick Beal
Nicholas David Beal (born 2 December 1970 in Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire) is a rugby union player who played at Fullback for Northampton Saints, England and the Lions. Career Club Beal spent his whole professional career at Northampton Saints, and captained the squad that won the Middlesex Sevens trophy in 2003. He missed out on their victory in the 2000 Heineken Cup Final due to injury. He retired in 2004. International Beal was a part of the England team that won the World Sevens title in 1993. Rob Hoadley
Rob Hoadley (born 28 March 1980) is an English rugby union former player and current coach. He is the former head coach of the San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby (MLR). Professional career Hoadley was born in Hammersmith, London, England. He joined London Irish in 1999, spending five seasons with the club and winning the Powergen Cup in 2002. In 2004, Hoadley moved away from London Irish to join rivals London Wasps. During his time at London Wasps the club won the 2004-05 English Premiership (he scored a try in the final as a replacement fullback), 2005–06 Anglo-Welsh Cup, 2006-07 Heineken Cup (he did not play in the final), and 2007–08 English Premiership (he did not play in the final). Darren Edwards
Darren Edwards (born 25 March 1974 in Maesteg, Wales) is a former rugby union player. A scrum-half, he was a member of the 2003 Wales national rugby union team and he played for Wales, Wales A, Sevens, Under-21, Students and Under-18 levels. Edwards also played for the Barbarians against , and . Edwards began his senior playing career with Saracens in 1996 and joined Newport RFC in 2000, playing 21 times for the club. Mike Worsley
Mike Worsley (born 1 December 1976 in Warrington) is a former Rugby Union prop. He started with West Park St Helens, while playing in older age-groups for high-flying rugby school St Ambrose College in Altrincham, then followed by Orrell and Bristol before joining London Irish in September 1998. He started in the 2002 Powergen Cup Final at Twickenham, as London Irish defeated the Northampton Saints. Worsley represented England Schools 18-Group and England U-21s before his form with the exiles propelled him into the England A side. After initially being selected for the England squad to tour New Zealand and Australia in June 2003, Worsley teamed up with the England A squad that won the Churchill Cup in Canada. Allen Erasmus 'Naka' Drotské (born 15 March 1971) is a former South African rugby union player, who played for the Springboks between 1993 and 1999. Playing career Provincial Drotské played as a flank for the Schools team at the 1989 Craven Week tournament and gained selection for the South African Schools team.
