2001–02 National Basketball Development League Season
The 2001–02 NBDL season was the inaugural season for the NBA Development League, National Basketball Development League. The league started with eight teams: Tulsa 66ers, Asheville Altitude, Austin Toros, Columbus Riverdragons, Fayetteville Patriots, Greenville Groove, New Mexico Thunderbirds, Huntsville Flight, Mobile Revelers, Florida Flame, North Charleston Lowgators and Roanoke Dazzle. The season ended with the Groove defeating the Lowgators 2–0 in the best-of-three Finals series to win the inaugural NBDL championship. NBA Development League
The NBA G League, or simply the G League, is the National Basketball Association's (NBA) official List of developmental and minor sports leagues, minor league basketball organization. The league was known as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL) from 2001 to 2005, and the NBA Development League (NBA D-League) from 2005 until 2017. The league started with eight teams until NBA commissioner David Stern announced a plan to expand the NBA D-League to 15 teams and develop it into a true minor league farm team, farm system, with each NBA D-League team affiliated with one or more NBA teams in March 2005. At the conclusion of the 2013–14 NBA season, 33% of NBA players had spent time in the NBA D-League, up from 23% in 2011. Assist (basketball)
In basketball, an assist is attributed to a player who passes the ball to a teammate in a way that leads directly to a score by field goal, meaning that they were "assisting" in the basket. An assist is also credited when a basket is awarded due to defensive goaltending. There is some judgment involved in deciding whether a passer should be credited with an assist. An assist can be scored for the passer even if the player who receives the pass makes a basket after dribbling the ball for a short distance. Huntsville is a city in Madison County, Limestone County, and Morgan County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. Michael Sharod Wilks, Jr. (born May 7, 1979) is an American coach and former professional basketball player who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA). College career After graduating from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, Wilks played four years (1997–2001) of college basketball at Rice University, where Mike majored in Economics. His senior year, Mike averaged 20.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, earning Western Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete honors. Jeff Myers (basketball)
Jeff Myers (born March 24, 1974) is an American retired basketball player. During college, Myers primarily played for the Drexel Dragons men's basketball between 1994 and 1997. After graduation, he played in the United States Basketball League and the Continental Basketball Association before joining the National Basketball Development League. With the NBDL, Myers played for the Greenville Groove from 2001 to 2003 and the Columbus Riverdragons from 2003 to 2005. While with the Groove, he won the first ever NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2002. Early life and education Myers was born on March 24, 1974, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line (informally known as the foul line or the charity stripe), a line situated at the end of the Key (basketball), restricted area. Terry Dehere
Lennox Dominique "Terry" Dehere (born September 12, 1971) is an American former basketball player who played six seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was an All-American college player at Seton Hall University. Following his playing career, Dehere became active in Democratic Party politics, as well as a restaurateur. Dehere was born in New York City, and grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, and played basketball under Coach Bob Hurley while attending St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Lorenzo Coleman
Lorenzo Coleman (September 9, 1975 −November 24, 2013) was an American basketball player. College career Coleman played college basketball for Tennessee Tech for four years, and had 437 blocks in 114 games. Professional career In the 2001 NBDL Supplemental Draft, Coleman was drafted first overall by the Roanoke Dazzle. He played 46 games for Roanoke in 2001–02 and led the NBDL in field goal percentage, at .606. Coleman played for the Harlem Globetrotters in 2002. Field Goal Percentage
Field goal percentage in basketball is the ratio of field goals made to field goals attempted. Its abbreviation is FG%. Although three-point field goal percentage is often calculated separately, three-point field goals are included in the general field goal percentage. Instead of using scales of 0 to 100%, the scale .000 to 1.000 is commonly used. A higher field goal percentage denotes higher efficiency. In basketball, a FG% of .500 (50%) or above is considered a good percentage, although this criterion does not apply equally to all positions. Guards usually have lower FG% than forwards and centers. Field goal percentage does not completely tell the skill of a player, but a low field goal percentage can indicate a poor offensive player or a player who takes many difficult shots. Block (basketball)
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Also, on a shooting foul, a blocked shot cannot be awarded or counted, even if the player who deflected the field goal attempt is different from the player who committed the foul.
