2001 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2001 Potters Holidays World World Indoor Bowls Championship was held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton on Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 8–21 January 2001, with the pairs following on from the 23–27 January 2001. In the singles Paul Foster won his second title beating Richard Corsie in the final. In the pairs Les Gillett and Mark McMahon defeated Hugh Duff & Paul Foster in the final. The women's singles competition took place in Belfast from March 28–30. The title was won by Betty Brown. World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship. Jason Greenslade
Jason John Greenslade (born 6 March 1970) is a Welsh international indoor and lawn bowler. After moving to Guernsey in 2022 he later represented them in competition. Bowls career Outdoors Greenslade took up bowling at the age of eight after his parents (both Welsh internationals) introduced him to the sport. In 2001, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic singles title. He has competed three Commonwealth Games in the 2002 Commonwealth Games at Heaton Park, Manchester (where he won a bronze in the fours, in the 2006 Commonwealth Games at the John Cain Memorial Park in Thornbury, Victoria, Australia and in the 2010 Commonwealth Games at the Yamuna Sports Complex in Delhi. Robert Newman (bowls)
Robert Newman (born 1975) is a former English international bowls player. Bowls career Newman won three bronze medals in the World Bowls Championship. The first two in the triples and fours at the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Ayr followed by another bronze in the fours at the 2008 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Christchurch. Newman also won a bronze medal at the lawn bowls competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He announced his retirement in 2016. He won two Men's National Championships in the triples (2003) and the fours (1993) bowling for Reading. Jeremy Norman Henry (born 3 April 1974) is a former Irish and current Australian lawn and indoor bowler born in Northern Ireland. Bowls career Outdoor Bowls Henry has achieved major success in the sport winning two gold medals in the World Outdoor Bowls Championship and three Commonwealth Games medals. In 1996 he won the gold in the pairs with Sammy Allen at the 1996 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Adelaide, Australia. Steve Glasson
Stephen John Glasson OAM (born 10 April 1969) is an Australian bowls player. He was number one in the world in 2004 and was ranked first in Australia between 1997 and 2005. He is currently the Australian national bowls coach. Early life Glasson was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1969. His father, Bob Glasson was a former Queensland bowls representative. Glasson took up bowls as a young child in the mid-1970s. While working as a bank teller as a teenager, his bank was held up. He decided to change jobs, becoming an apprentice greenkeeper at a bowls club. Gerald Salem Baker (born 7 October 1960), known as Gerry Baker, is a lawn bowler. Bowls career Baker is from Bloemfontein, in South Africa and has won three medals at the World Outdoor Championships and three medals at the Commonwealth Games. He broke a South African record by appearing at six Commonwealth Games. In 1996, he won the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic pairs title with Neil Burkett. David Holt (born 1966) is an Australian and former England international lawn and indoor bowler. He started bowling aged 12 joining the Winton crown green bowls club. Holt won a gold medal in the fours with John Ottaway, Simon Skelton and Robert Newman at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Gary Andrew Smith (born 13 October 1958) is a former English lawn and indoor bowler and is the Chief Executive of World Bowls. He is not to be confused with the Durham indoor bowler Gary R Smith. Bowls career Smith partnered Andy Thomson when they won the 1993 World Indoor Bowls Championship Pairs. He started playing at the age of 15 and played for the Blackheath and Greenwich bowls clubs and the Cyphers indoor club at Beckenham. Neil Booth
Neil Booth (born 19 February 1968) is a former Northern Irish international lawn and indoor bowler and bowls team coach and manager. Bowls career Booth has won three World Championship medals starting with the gold medal in the fours at the 2004 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Ayr with Jonathan Ross, Noel Graham and Jim Baker. This was followed by two bronze medals in 2012. In addition he has won four Commonwealth Games medals. He won the gold medal in the fours at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur with Gary McCloy, Ian McClure and Martin McHugh. He won a bronze in 2002, a silver medal in 2006 and another silver in 2014.
