The final of the Javelin throw, Women's Javelin Throw event at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics, 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was held on Monday August 6, 2001. Javelin Throw
The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown as far as possible. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong (''Amentum, ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', a leather strap around the shaft, so when they released the javelin, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. Mikaela Ingberg
Mikaela Johanna Emilia Ingberg (born 29 July 1974 in Vaasa) is a female javelin thrower from Finland. Her personal best throw is 64.03 metres, achieved in September 2000 in Berlin. She was nicknamed "Mikke" during her career. Her achievements include bronze medals at the 1995 World Championships, 1998 and 2002 European Championships. In the annual match against Sweden in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium in 2008, Mikaela Ingberg, then Finland’s team captain, won the Javelin Throw with her last throw of 59.51 meters. Felicia Țilea-Moldovan
Felicia Țilea-Moldovan (29 September 1967 – 3 March 2025) was a Romanian javelin thrower. She was a four-time Olympian, and winner of the gold medal at the 1995 Summer Universiade in Japan. Tatyana Ivanovna Shikolenko (; born 10 May 1968 in Krasnodar) is a retired Russian track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. During her career, she won two silver medals at the World Championships. Her personal best throw of 67.20 metres was achieved in 2000. She battled primarily with Mirela Manjani, who captured the gold medal on both occasions Shikolenko finished second.
