Captain Beany
Captain Beany (born Barry Kirk on 23 September 1954) is a Welsh eccentric and charity fundraiser in Sandfields, Port Talbot, South Wales. Biography Kirk worked in the computer department of the British Petroleum chemical plant in Baglan, Neath Port Talbot. In May 1991, he changed his name by deed poll to Captain Beany. He began painting his face and bald head orange, donned a golden cape, pants, gloves and boots. To date, Captain Beany claims to have raised over £100,000 for charity through participation in various events, such as the London and New York Marathons. In 1986 Beany set a world record for the longest time sitting in a bath full of baked beans, which lasted over 100 hours. In 2006, Beany appeared on the BBC programme, '' Let Me Entertain You''. History Of Swansea
The history of Swansea in South Wales covers a period of continuous occupation stretching back a thousand years, while there is archaeological evidence of prehistoric human occupation of the surrounding area for thousands of years before that. Swansea ( cy, Abertawe) – occupying a position at the mouth of the River Tawe and adjacent to an extensive bay at the western end of the Bristol Channel – was the main town of its region for much of the Mediaeval period. In the 18th century, local dignitaries attempted to establish it as a tourist resort. The town achieved greater prominence with the onset of the Industrial Revolution. Mirroring similar population explosions in the South Wales Valleys, Swansea's population rose from 6,000 to 17,000 between the Censuses of 1801 and 1851. Peter Black (Welsh Politician)
Peter Malcolm Black is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician, and was a Member of the Welsh Assembly for the South Wales West Region between 1999 and 2016. Political career A Councillor for the Cwmbwrla ward on City and County of Swansea Council, he was leader of the Liberal Democrat Group 1984–99. He is a past Chair of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and of the party's Finance and Administration Committee. Valerie "Val" Lloyd (born 16 November 1943) is a Welsh Labour politician. She represented the constituency of Swansea East at the National Assembly for Wales from 2001 to 2011. Education Born in the Townhill area of Swansea, Glamorgan, Lloyd was educated at Swansea High School for Girls and at the Swansea University. 1999 National Assembly For Wales Election
The first National Assembly for Wales elections were held on 6 May 1999. The overall turnout of voters was 46.3%. Although Welsh Labour were the biggest party, they did not gain enough seats to form a majority government and instead entered into coalition with the Liberal Democrats. The election was marked by the historically high level of support for Plaid Cymru, who won their highest share of the vote in any Wales-wide election and, as of 2021, their highest number of seats in an Assembly election to date.
