Conference League (speedway)
The Conference League was the third and lowest division of motorcycle speedway racing in the United Kingdom governed by the Speedway Control Board (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). The other leagues being the Elite League and Premier League. The League consisted of eight teams for the 2008 season. In 2009 it was replaced with the National League. History The British League Division Three had been created in 1994 as a replacement for the second-half junior leagues that were scrapped when British League matches were extended to eighteen heats. The league was renamed the British Academy League in 1995, but many of the teams that took part experienced severe financial problems. In order to reduce costs, the league was re-launched as the Conference league in 1996 and was an entirely amateur competition. Buxton Hitmen
The Buxton Hitmen were a speedway team in the British National League (formerly the Conference League) from 1994 to 2018. The club stopped racing in the National League after the 2018 speedway season. History The team's inaugural season was in the 1994 British League Division Three in which they finished in 6th place. They following year they finished 3rd in the 1995 Academy League before joining the Conference League (division 3). During the 2002 Speedway Conference League season the team won their first silverware when winning the Conference League Knockout Cup. In the 25 years that the team raced they always competed in the third division and their best season was 2010 when they achieved the treble. After finishing 2nd in the regular season table behind Dudley Heathens during the 2010 National League speedway season they won the playoffs, defeating Newport in the final. Rory Schlein
Rory Robert Schlein (born 1 September 1984) is an Australian speedway rider. Career Born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Schlein, lived in the southern Adelaide suburb of Hallett Cove and won the Australian Under-16 Championship at the Northline Speedway in his home town of Darwin in 2000. Schlein was signed by the Edinburgh Monarchs in 2001 and won the Conference League championship that year while on loan at Sheffield Tigers. He won the Premier League championship with the Monarchs in 2003 and won the Australian Under-21 Speedway Championship in 2003 and 2004 and finished 2nd to Chris Holder in 2005. He also won the South Australian Championship in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He first extended season in the highest British league was for Belle Vue Aces during the 2004 Elite League speedway season. Barrie Evans (speedway Rider)
Barrie Evans (born 16 April 1984) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Evans started racing in the British leagues during the 1999 Speedway Conference League, when riding for Mildenhall Fen Tigers. The following season he signed for the Arena Essex Hammers in the Premier League but remained with Mildenhall by doubling up. In 2002, he joined Newport Wasps although he was still doubling up with Mildenhall. He rode with Newport Wasps in the Premier League during 2003 but recorded his best season as a Mildenhall rider the same year. He helped Mildenhall win the Conference League and Knockout Cup double, in addition to winning the Conference League Riders' Championship, held on 30 August at Rye House Stadium. Evans continued to double up riding for Newport and Wimbledon Dons in 2004, he won the Conference League Pairs with Wimbledon in 2004. Carl Wilkinson (speedway Rider)
Carl Adam Wilkinson (born 16 May 1981) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Born in Boston, England, Wilkinson started his career with the Peterborough Panthers in the Conference League in 1997 a week before his sixteenth birthday. It took another two seasons before he was awarded a regular Conference League ride when he was signed by his local club, the Boston Barracudas in 2000. Wilkinson has ridden for Great Britain at under-21 level. He won the Conference League with the Peterborough Pumas in 1997 and the Conference League KO Cup with the Boston Barracudas in 2000. He was retained by Boston for 2001, but 2002 saw him signed up by the Newport Wasps for their Premier League team, where he recorded a 4.35 average in his first season. Scott Andrew Pegler (born 3 August 1973) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Pegler started racing in the British leagues during the 1989 National League season, when riding for the Exeter Falcons. He struggled to establish himself in the team over the following seasons and it was not until the 1994 season that he was a regular in the Exeter team. He rode in the top tier of British speedway during the 1995 Premier League speedway season, again for Exeter. Rye House Stadium
Rye House Stadium is a former greyhound racing and speedway venue in Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It is situated adjacent to the River Lea Navigation. Origins The name Rye House originates from a collection of medieval buildings on an area known as the Isle of Rye due to the fact that the land was directly next door to the River Lea/Lee and in particular the Lee Navigation. When the stadium was constructed in 1935 it was put next door to Rye House on a spare plot which is where the name for the stadium came from. Rye House had been the family home for the Parr family that included Catherine in the 16th century and later a workhouse and tourist attraction in the 19th century. All that remains today of the original Rye House is the gatehouse found to the north of the stadium. The stadium (or circuit as it was then) was first used on 27 May 1934 when it hosted speedway meetings. The National League Knockout Cup is a speedway third tier Knockout Cup competition in the United Kingdom. The competition was previously known as the Academy League Knockout Cup (1995) and the Conference League Knockout Cup (1996-2008) until it changed name to the National League Knockout Cup. The Mildenhall Fen Tigers are a British speedway team, founded in 1975 and currently riding in the National Development League.
