Montserrat ( ) is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrat's Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. John Osborne (Montserrat Politician)
John Alfred Osborne (27 May 1936 – 2 January 2011) was a chief minister of Montserrat. He first came to that position in November 1978, as a member of the People's Liberation Movement, and continued until losing legislative council elections on 10 October 1991. By 2001 he had switched parties, joining the New People's Liberation Movement. Under his leadership, the NPLM won 7 of 9 seats in legislative council elections on 2 April 2001, and he served as chief minister from 5 April 2001 until 3 June 2006 when he resigned after elections in which his party was defeated. The Premier of Montserrat is the head of government of the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. The Premier is appointed by the Governor of Montserrat on behalf of the monarch of the United Kingdom, currently King Charles III. The current Premier of Montserrat is Easton Taylor-Farrell of the Movement for Change and Prosperity. The Premier is appointed by the Governor from among the members of the Legislative Assembly, which consists of nine elected members. Between 1960 and 2011 the position was known as the Chief Minister of Montserrat, this changed on 27 September 2011 when the Montserrat Constitution Order 2010 took effect. Adelina E. Tuitt is a Montserratian politician who served in the Legislative Council of Montserrat from 1996 until 2001. She was the territory's Minister of Health, Education, and Community Services, in the wake of the volcanic eruptions of the 1990s, which devastated the southern half of the island. A member of the Movement for National Reconstruction party, Tuitt represented the Eastern constituency. Biography In 1993, prior to entering elected office, Adelina Tuitt was the public relations officer for the government of Montserrat. In this position, she advocated for Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory, to distance itself from the United Kingdom by building closer ties with other Caribbean states. David Samuel Brandt is an attorney and politician from Montserrat who served as the island's 6th Chief Minister from 22 August 1997 to 5 April 2001. As of June 18, 2019, Brandt has been remanded at Her Majesty's Prison in Montserrat until the beginning of his trial in November 2019. Sex crimes In September 2015, Brandt was charged with two counts of conspiracy to have sexual intercourse with a minor. He was released on EC$20,000 bail. Soufrière Hills
The Soufrière Hills are an active, complex stratovolcano with many lava domes forming its summit on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. After a long period of dormancy, the Soufrière Hills volcano became active in 1995 and has continued to erupt ever since. Its eruptions have rendered more than half of Montserrat uninhabitable, destroying the capital city, Plymouth, and causing widespread evacuations: about two-thirds of the population have left the island. Chances Peak in the Soufrière Hills was the highest summit on Montserrat until the mid-1990s, but it has since been eclipsed by various rising and falling volcanic domes during the recent volcanic activity. Elections in Montserrat take place within the framework of a multi-party democracy and a parliamentary system. The Legislative Assembly is directly elected, and a Chief Minister is selected by the party or coalition with the most seats in the Assembly. Electoral history Elections were held in Montserrat in the 19th century, but with a severely limited franchise; in 1837 only 114 of the 7,119 residents of the island were eligible to vote.
