2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
The 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ran from June through October 2001, open to all soccer teams in the United States. The Los Angeles Galaxy won the tournament with a 2–1 victory over the New England Revolution in extra time in the final at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State-Fullerton. Four MLS squads were upset in the second round. However, one team that held on was the San Jose Earthquakes, who won 7–6 on penalties in the third round against the Milwaukee Rampage, then in the quarterfinals lost to their California rival Los Angeles, but not before an exciting game that in the end saw penalties from all ten position players. LA won 10–9 on PKs after a 1–1 draw. The Seattle Sounders Select had the best performance by a PDL team, defeating the Dallas Burn in extra time in the second round, then lost to the eventual champion Los Angeles 3–1. LA Galaxy, also known as the Los Angeles Galaxy, are an American professional soccer club based in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Galaxy competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), as a member of the Western Conference. The club began play in 1996 as one of the league's 10 charter members. North Carolina Fusion U-23, formerly known as Carolina Dynamo, is an American soccer team based in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States. The Columbus Crew, formerly known as Columbus Crew SC, is an American professional soccer club based in Columbus, Ohio. The Chico Rooks were an American soccer team, founded in 1993 by Dave Stahl and Eric Snedeker. The team was a member of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid, until 2006. San Diego Flash was an American soccer team based in San Diego, California, United States. Founded in 1998, the team returned to competitive play in 2011 and most recently played in the Southern Conference of the West Division of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid.
