2001 Cardiff Sevens
The 2001 Cardiff Sevens was an rugby sevens tournament that took place at the Rodney Parade with the finals being held at the Millennium Stadium. It took place between 2–3 June 2001 and was the first edition of the Cardiff Sevens and the final round of the 2000–01 World Sevens Series. Heading into the tournament, New Zealand held an eight point lead over Australia with a semi-final placing in the cup being enough to give New Zealand the title. After both teams qualified through to the cup knockout stage with them only conceding ten points between the two, they would meet in the cup final with New Zealand taking out not only the Cardiff Sevens but the World Series with a 31–5 win over Australia. In the minor placings, Fiji took out the plate final defeating Wales while England won the bowl over Portugal. 2000–01 World Sevens Series
The 2000–01 World Sevens Series was the second edition of the global circuit for men's national rugby sevens teams, organised by the International Rugby Board World Rugby is the world governing body for the sport of rugby union. The South African national rugby sevens team competes in the World Rugby Sevens Series, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the Summer Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. Overall, the team has won the World Rugby Sevens Series 4 times, as well as having won 39 tournaments in the series. Arabian Gulf Rugby Sevens Team
The Arabian Gulf rugby sevens national team was a minor sevens side that represented the Gulf Cooperation Council member states. The team first played in 1990, competing at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament that year before travelling to the qualifying event for the Rugby World Cup Sevens held in Sicily. Over the next two decades the Arabian Gulf was a regular participant at the Hong Hong Sevens and in their home event, the Dubai Sevens. The Arabian Gulf team was dissolved at the end of 2010 to be replaced by single-country national teams. It was the Japan Sevens leg held at Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium in Tokyo on 29–30 April 2001. The 2001 Kuala Lumpur Sevens was an international rugby sevens tournament that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as the sixth leg of the 2000–01 World Sevens Series. It was the first Malaysia Sevens tournament to be hosted as part of the World Sevens Series, and the event took place at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on 21–22 April 2001. The 2001 Wellington Sevens, also known as the 2001 New Zealand Sevens, was an international rugby sevens tournament that was held in Wellington, New Zealand as the third leg of the 2000–01 World Sevens Series. The tournament took place at the Westpac Stadium on 9–10 February 2001. The hosts, New Zealand, lost their first match of the season as they were defeated 19–17 by defending Wellington Sevens champions Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals. This was only the second time that a New Zealand sevens side had failed to reach the Cup final of World Sevens Series event.
