2001 Beach Volleyball World Championships
These page shows the results of the III Beach Volleyball World Championships, held from August 1 to August 4, 2001 in Klagenfurt, Austria. It was the third official edition of this event, after ten unofficial championships (1987-1996) all held in Rio de Janeiro, and the second to be organized in Europe. Eric Fonoimoana
Eric Fonoimoana (born June 7, 1969) is an American former beach volleyball player of Samoan descent who paired with Dain Blanton to win the gold medal in beach volleyball at the 2000 Olympic Games. He has played professionally for more than 16 years and has entered over 200 tournaments. Fonoimoana won at least one tournament for seven straight years between 1998 and 2004. He is a former AVP Most Valuable Player and is in the top 10 in terms of all-time tournaments played. He has earned over 1 million dollars playing beach volleyball. Biography He was born in Manhattan Beach, California, and attended Mira Costa High School and then UCSB, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. 2002 was Fonoimoana's peak year in which he reached the AVP finals six times and won four titles with then-partner Dax Holdren. Markus Dieckmann (born 7 January 1976 in Bonn) is a retired professional beach volleyball player from Germany, who represented his native country at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. There he ended up in ninth place in the overall-rankings. Partnering Jonas Reckermann he twice won the gold medal at the European Beach Volleyball Championships, in 2002 and 2004. Kevin Kahn Wong (born September 12, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a retired professional beach volleyball player. He currently lives in Hawaii and runs a volleyball training program for youth. Personal life Wong graduated from the Punahou School. He then attended UCLA and received his degree in economics in 1995. Wong was named to People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" issue in 2000. He was honored by the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California in "Celebrating Chinese Americans in Sports", May 2009. He served as a beach volleyball analyst for NBC Sports at the Summer Olympics of 2012 and 2016 and continues to work on all of NBC's coverage. Stein Metzger
Stein Metzger (born November 17, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a male beach volleyball player from the United States. He played college men's indoor volleyball at UCLA where he won 3 NCAA National championships under legendary coach Al Scates. Metzger competed in the AVP. In 2006 he played with his high school teammate, Mike Lambert, and they advanced to the Final Four in fourteen of the fifteen team events, winning five times. They formed the only team to not have a losing record against any other team that season. Metzger made his Olympic beach volleyball debut at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he and partner Dax Holdren finished fifth, after having won the silver medal the previous year at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Oliver Stamm
Oliver Stamm (born on 25 October 1966), is an Austrian former professional beach volleyballer. Biography Oliver Stamm was born in Vienna on 25 October 1966. He is the son of the former professional footballer Walter Stamm. He went to the Bundesrealgymnasium in Mödling, where he finally swapped volleyball for football in 1981. Until 1993, he played indoor volleyball. During this time he was Austrian champion and cup winner and had 75 appearances in the Austrian national team. He was also the first Austrian to become a professional international volleyball player in the Spanish honor division near Almería. From 1993 to 2002, he switched to beach volleyball, where he did pioneering work in Austria. He built up the sport in Austria that did not exist before.
