2000–01 WHL Season
The 2000–01 WHL season was the 35th season for the Western Hockey League. Eighteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Red Deer Rebels won the President's Cup before going on to win the Memorial Cup. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Spokane Chiefs
The Spokane Chiefs are a major junior ice hockey team that plays in the Western Hockey League based out of Spokane, Washington. The team plays its home games at the Spokane Arena. Their uniforms are similar to those of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens. Spokane consistently ranks in the top 10 in the Canadian Hockey League in attendance. The Chiefs won the Memorial Cup in 1991 and 2008. They also hosted the first outdoor hockey game in WHL history on January 15, 2011, at Avista Stadium versus the Kootenay Ice. Jordan Krestanovich (born June 14, 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who served as a player-head coach for the Braehead Clan in the British Elite Ice Hockey League. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Colorado Avalanche. Kyle Wanvig (born January 29, 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey Right winger who played in the National Hockey League with the Minnesota Wild and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Playing career Wanvig was originally drafted 89th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, but he re-entered the draft and was selected 36th overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Blake Evans (born July 2, 1980) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre, who last played for Kyle Elks in the SVHL. Jarret Lee Stoll (born June 24, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Stoll has played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild. Jared Aulin (born March 15, 1982) is a Canadian former professional hockey centre. He was a second round selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2000 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft and played 17 NHL games for the Los Angeles Kings. Layne Ulmer (born September 14, 1980) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who most recently played centre for Manchester Storm in the EIHL. Playing career Ulmer was drafted 209th overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators while playing for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. Justin Mapletoft (born January 11, 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft as their fifth-round pick, number 130 overall. He played 38 NHL games with the Islanders in addition to his four seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL.
