The 2000 New South Wales local elections were held from May to December 2000 elect the councils of local government areas (LGAs) of New South Wales, Australia. The elections were all scheduled to be held on 11 September 1999, but were deferred while possible amalgamations were considered. Background Deferred elections Election dates For newly created LGAs, the elections were scheduled several months after the official proclamation and commencement of operations. A number of councils which deferred elections ultimately did not proceed with amalgamations, and also held elections. Results The Australian Democrats had their first-ever victory on South Sydney City Council, with Peter Furness elected as a councillor for South Ward. 1995 New South Wales Local Elections
The 1995 New South Wales local elections were held on 9 September 1995 to elect the councils of the Local government areas of New South Wales, local government areas (LGAs) of New South Wales, Australia. Although there was speculation that there could be backlash against the New South Wales Labor Party, Labor Party based on federal political issues, this did not eventuate, and state Labor leader Bob Carr said he was happy with the results. The Greens NSW, The Greens won 10 seats, including in Marrickville Council, Marrickville, one in City of Randwick, Randwick, one in Municipality of Woollahra, Woollahra and three in City of Newcastle, Newcastle. No Aircraft Noise gained representation in every LGA the party contested − two seats in Municipality of Leichhardt, Leichhardt, three in Municipality of Hunter's Hill, Hunter's Hill and three in Marrickville Council, Marrickville.
