2000 IAAF Golden League
The 2000 IAAF Golden League was the third edition of the annual international track and field meeting series, held from 23 June to 1 September. It was contested at seven European meetings: the Meeting Gaz de France, Golden Gala, Bislett Games, Weltklasse Zürich, Herculis, Memorial Van Damme and the Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF). The Golden League jackpot consisted of 50 kilograms of gold bars. The jackpot was available to athletes who won at least five of the seven competitions of the series in one of the 12 specified events (7 for men, 5 for women). IAAF Golden League
The IAAF Golden League was an annual series of outdoor track and field meetings organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Athletes who won specific events at all of the series meetings were awarded a jackpot prize, sometimes given in gold bars, which inspired the series name. The competition began with seven meetings and it lasted for twelve years as the IAAF's top tier of one-day meetings. Within the IAAF's global circuit, athletes received additional points for their performances at the Golden League for the IAAF Grand Prix (1998–2002), IAAF World Outdoor Meetings (2003–2005), then IAAF World Athletics Tour (2006–2009). The Golden League was replaced in 2010 by the Diamond League, which marked an expansion to fourteen seasonal meetings covering all track and field events except the hammer throw. Brian Lewis (athlete)
Brian M. Lewis (born December 5, 1974) is an American athlete, winner of gold medal in 4 × 100 m relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Born in Sacramento, California, Brian Lewis played baseball (his father and uncle had played professional baseball) through his ninth grade, but moved then to athletics, because he did not want his father to coach him. Lewis graduated from Highlands High School in 1993. Lewis was the member of American 4 × 100 m relay team, that did not finish its heat at the 1997 World Championships. At the 1998 Goodwill Games, Lewis was third in 100 m. In 1999, Lewis won the US National Championships in 100 m and ran the third leg on the American 4 × 100 m relay team, which won the gold medal at the World Championships and also reached the semifinals of 100 m. Ali Ezzine
Ali Ezzine (Arabic: علي الزين ; born September 3, 1978, in Ain Taoujdate, Morocco) is a Moroccan athlete who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He won the bronze medal in this event at the 2000 Summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. He first came to prominence with a bronze medal in the steeplechase at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Athletics, also held in Sydney. His first senior medal came at the 1998 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where his twelfth-place finish helped the Moroccan men to the team silver medal. He had his first individual global success at the World Championships in Athletics. At the 1999 World Championships he won the bronze medal in the men's steeplechase. Paul Tergat
Paul Kibii Tergat (born 17 June 1969) is a Kenyan former professional long distance runner. He became the first Kenyan man to set the world record in the marathon in 2003, with a time of 2:04:55, and is regarded as one of the most accomplished long-distance runners of all time. Runnerworld called him the "Most comprehensive runner of all time". Towards the end of his career he concentrated exclusively on the marathon. Tergat set several world records and won many titles on the track, in cross country, and on the road. He lives and trains in Eldoret. Early life Paul Tergat was born on 17 June 1969 in Riwo, Baringo District, in Kenya's Rift Valley Province. He attended Riwo Primary school and later joined Kapkawa Boys High School. Brahim Lahlafi
Brahim Lahlafi ( ar, إبراهيم لحلافي) (born 15 April 1968, in Fes) is a retired long-distance runner who represented Morocco during his active career. He acquired French citizenship on 6 April 2002, but represented Morocco again from 15 March 2007. His greatest achievement was the Olympic bronze medal in 2000. This was his first medal at a major international event, having barely missed the podium at the 1995 World Cross Country Championships (5th place) and twice in 5000 metres at the World Championships; 1995 (5th) and 1999 (fourth). He did win a bronze medal in 3000 metres at the 1998 African Championships. In 1996 he was the winner of the inaugural Belgrade Race Through History competition. Haile Gebrselassie ( am, ኀይሌ ገብረ ሥላሴ, ''haylē gebre silassē''; born 18 April 1973) is an Ethiopian retired long-distance track, road running athlete, and businessman. He won two Olympic gold medals and four World Championship titles over the 10,000 metres. He triumphed in the Berlin Marathon four times consecutively and also had three straight wins at the Dubai Marathon. Further to this, he earned four world titles indoors and was the 2001 World Half Marathon Champion. Sammy Kipketer
Sammy Kipketer (born 29 September 1981 in Rokocho, Keiyo District) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specialises in the 5000 metres and cross-country running. Career He graduated from Lelboinet Secondary School in 1998. The next year he qualified for the 1999 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where he finished sixth at the junior race. The Kenyan Army recruited him in 2001. He now trains with Daniel Komen who was Kenya's foremost runner for a while. Kipketer broke the 3,000m List of junior world records in athletics, junior world record twice when he was 17. He has also broken the 13-minute barrier for the 5000 metres. He won a 10000 metres in Brussels with his personal record time of 26:49.38. Right now he is focusing on 10-kilometre races. Ali Saidi-Sief ( ar, علي سعيدي سياف, born March 15, 1978) is an Algerian Olympic runner. His speciality is the 1500 m race, but he took a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics for the 5000 m, losing the gold to Ethiopian athlete Million Wolde. Saidi-Sief received a two-year suspension from the International Association of Athletics Federations after failing a urine test at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada by testing positive for nandrolone, a banned performance-enhancing steroid. A second expert examination at a laboratory in Cologne showed that a supplement he had been taking (Peruvat) contained nandrolone, which was not in the labelled ingredients. André Bucher
André Bucher (born 19 October 1976) is a retired Swiss 800 metres runner who ran for Adidas. He is best known for winning the gold medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton in his event. Bucher also won the indoor bronze that same year. He was born in Neudorf. Bucher won two European Championship silver medals in 1998, 2002 and also silver at the 2002 Indoor. Other achievements include finishing third at the 2003 IAAF World Athletics Final. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney a medal was possibly chiselled out of him when he was barged into by his competitor Andrea Longo. Djabir Saïd-Guerni
Aïssa Djabir Saïd-Guerni ( ar, عيسى جبير سعيد قرني, born 29 March 1977 in Algiers) is a retired Algerian athlete who predominantly competed in the 800 metres.
