2000 Costa Rican Protests
The protests against the Energy Combo of Costa Rica were a series of demonstrations and popular protests held in Costa Rica as of March 20, 2000 after the approval in the first debate in the Legislative Assembly of the "Law for the Improvement of Public Services and Telecommunications and State Participation", also known as "Combo Energético" and popularly as "Combo ICE". This law was intended to allow competition in the telecommunications industry managed by Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad, and was supported by both major parties of the government. ICE was popular among the general public of Costa Rica, and they saw the decision as privatizing the agency. Many were also worried about a major intrusion of foreign investment. The protests are considered a historic Costa Rican event for being one of the most significant social protests in recent times. Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad ( en, Costa Rican Institute of Electricity) (ICE) is the Costa Rican government-run electricity and telecommunications services provider. Together with the Radiographic Costarricense SA (RACSA) and Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL), they form the ICE Group. ICE was founded on 8 April 1949 by Decree-Law No. 449, after the Costa Rican Civil War of 1948, in order to solve the problems of power shortages that occurred in Costa Rica in the 1940s. Since 1963, ICE provides telecommunications services throughout the country. The attempts to reform ICE throughout a set of laws in the years 1999 and 2000 generated a great social mobilization, including the 2000 Costa Rican protests. The ruling party at that time, the Social Christian Unity Party, and the main opposition, National Liberation Party, agreed to change the institution. 2018 Costa Rican Protests
The 2018 protests in Costa Rica was a civil conflict that took place in the Central-American country of Costa Rica for 93 days, after the trade unions went on an indefinite strike against the tax reform bill promoted by the Executive Branch in the Assembly Legislative. Protests The protest movement started on September 10, 2018 and culminated on December 11 of that same year, when the unions of the Supreme Court, the only ones still on strike, abandoned their protest.
