2000 CIAU Football Season
The 2000 CIAU football season began on September 2, 2000, and concluded with the 36th Vanier Cup national championship on December 2 at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, with the Ottawa Gee-Gees winning their second championship. Twenty-four universities across Canada competed in CIAU football this season, the highest level of amateur play in Canadian football, under the auspices of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU). Hardy Trophy
The Hardy Trophy is a Canadian sport trophy, presented annually to the winner of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association Football Conference of U Sports, the country's governing body for university athletics. It is named for Evan Hardy, the former head of the agricultural engineering department at the University of Saskatchewan, who had played for the Huskies for its first five years before a rule that only students could play. Hardy continued on as coach and created a western university league. The original trophy was replaced in 1997 after it fell apart during an on-field celebration of the Huskies win in 1996 at home at Griffiths Stadium. The original Hardy trophy was unearthed beneath a pile of storage boxes in 2008 at the University of Saskatchewan. Darnell Edwards
Darnell Edwards (born November 11, 1979) is a former Canadian football free safety who played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Edwards was drafted out of college by Saskatchewan (29th overall) in 2002. Throughout most of his career, he shared the starting job with Jason Mallett and Scott Gordon, both Canadians. Donnie Ruiz
Donald Ruiz (born July 5, 1978) is a retired Canadian Football League player who played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Renegades, and Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2001 to 2006 as a free safety. Ruiz was born in Montreal, Quebec, and grew up in Stoney Creek, Ontario (now Hamilton, Ontario), where he attended Orchard Park Secondary School. He attended university at Wilfrid Laurier University where he played as a defensive halfback for the Golden Hawks and was named the 1999 Ontario University Athletics defensive player of the year. Ruiz was signed as an undrafted free agent out of university by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2000 and was expected to make the team until he broke his clavicle in a pre-season game. Javier Glatt (born October 10, 1981, in Calgary, Alberta) is a retired professional Canadian football linebacker who played for eight seasons in the Canadian Football League. Andre Talbot
Andre Talbot (born May 3, 1978) is a former professional wide receiver and slotback who played gridiron football in the Canadian Football League. Talbot played his first nine seasons in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts and his tenth season with the Edmonton Eskimos. Football career Talbot played high school football at Monsignor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School in Oshawa. He later played university football at Wilfrid Laurier University where he was a two time All-Canadian and was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 2001. On February 10, 2010, Talbot was traded from the Argonauts to the Eskimos along with receiver Brad Smith in exchange for defensive tackle Eric Taylor. The Peter Gorman Trophy is awarded to the Rookie of the Year in U Sports Football. The Trophy acknowledges the great contribution Peter Gorman has made to the development of Canadian University Football. Randy Chevrier
Randy Robert Chevrier (born June 6, 1976) is a Canadian football long snapper for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He has also played for the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He also was a member of the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals in the National Football League. Presidents' Trophy (CIS)
The Presidents' Trophy is an annual Canadian sports award presented to the most outstanding defensive player in U Sports football. The trophy was first presented in 1980 after having been championed by two past presidents of Canadian university sports bodies. The name indirectly honours Ed Zemrau, past president of U Sports (then known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union); and Robert Doty, past president of Canada's university football championship game, then known as the College Bowl and now as the Vanier Cup. Kojo Aidoo
Kojo Aidoo (born November 27, 1978) is a former Canadian football fullback (gridiron football), fullback and special teams specialist who played for the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 2003 to 2007. Originally from Ghana, Aidoo played college football for the McMaster Marauders football, McMaster Marauders from 1998 to 2002. Aidoo was most successful during the 2000 season, when he broke conference records for rushing yards and touchdowns. His performance earned him the Hec Crighton Trophy as the most outstanding university football player in Canada, and he was honored with numerous other accolades. Hec Crighton Trophy
The Hec Crighton Trophy (sometimes referred to as the Hec Crighton Award) is awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian football player in U Sports. The trophy is named after the late Hec Crighton - teacher, coach, referee, and author of the Official Football Rule Book and the U Sports Rule Book. It was first presented in 1967 by the board of directors of the Canadian College Bowl. It is the Canadian equivalent to the American NCAA Heisman Trophy. The Western Mustangs program has produced the most Hec Crighton winners with seven as well as the most individual winners with six ( Tim Tindale won the award twice). Chris Flynn has won the Hec Crighton Trophy three times, consecutively, while no other player has won the award more than twice.
