2000 Anchorage Mayoral Election
The 2000 Anchorage mayoral election was held on April 4 and May 2, 2000, to elect the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. It saw election of George Wuerch. Incumbent mayor Rick Mystrom was term-limited. Proposition 10, passed in 1999, required mayoral candidates to receive 50% of the votes cast in a race to avoid a runoff. Since no candidate had received a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff was held between the top-two finishers. George Wuerch
George Poe Wuerch (born 1936) is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He served as mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 2000 to 2003. In the 2003 mayoral election, he was defeated for reelection by former city assemblyman Mark Begich. Before this, Wuerch was chair of the Anchorage Assembly and chair of the board of directors for the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. A retired United States Marine Corps officer with 21 years of service, Wuerch has also been governmental affairs manager for the Northwest Alaskan Gasline, the founder and president of Fluor Daniel Alaska Engineering, and the vice president of corporate affairs for the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. Mark Begich
Mark Peter Begich ( ; born March 30, 1962) is an American politician who served as a United States senator from Alaska from 2009 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as Mayor of Anchorage from 2003 to 2009. Born in Anchorage, Begich is the son of former U.S. Representative Nick Begich Sr. He was elected to the Anchorage Assembly at the age of 26. He eventually served as chairman for three years, before leaving the Assembly in 1998. Begich ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Mayor of Anchorage in 1994 and 2000 before being elected in 2003. He was subsequently reelected in 2006. In the 2008 Senate election, Begich narrowly defeated incumbent Ted Stevens, at the time the longest-serving Republican member of the U.S. Senate. Rick Mystrom
Richard Mystrom (born 1944) is an American politician, businessman, and author who served as the 32nd mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage from 1994 to 2000. He is a member of the Republican party. Early life and education Mystrom was born in Minnesota in 1944 and attended the University of Colorado Boulder. In 1964, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He moved to Alaska in 1972. Career In 1975, Mystrom established Mystrom/Beck Advertising. In 1982, he received the Small Business Person of the Year Award from President Ronald Reagan.
