Southern Province, Sri Lanka
The Southern Province ( si, දකුණු පළාත ''Dakuṇu Paḷāta'', ta, தென் மாகாணம் ''Theṉ Mākāṇam'') of Sri Lanka is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. It is the 7th largest province by area and is home to 2.5 million people, the 3rd most populated province. The province is bordered by Sabaragamuwa Province and Uva Province to the North, Eastern Province to the Northeast, Western Province to the Northwest and the Indian Ocean to the South, West and East. The Province's capital is Galle. The Southern Province is a geographic area consisting of the districts of Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena
Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena (born 10 October 1945) is a Sri Lankan politician and landed proprietor. He is the current Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament. Political career He first entered parliament in 1983 as the Hakmana United National Party and has been active in politics for more than 30 years. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was a young MP when he openly criticised the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord for a new provincial councils system to be established in Sri Lanka. He along with Chandrakumara Wijeya Gunawardena, the member for Kamburupitiya voted against the bill in Parliament becoming the only two government members who voted against it. He was later removed by the then President J. R. Jayewardene from his Parliamentary seat for violation of the party rules by not voting for the bill. Athauda Seneviratne
Athauda Seneviratne (19 September 1931 – 31 March 2022) was a Sri Lankan politician and a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. He was also a Cabinet Minister of Sri Lanka. Political career In 1957 Athauda was elected to the Village Council of Othara Gam Dolaha Pattu. In 1960 he unsuccessfully contested the March 1960 parliamentary election in the Dedigama Electoral District. At the 1965 parliamentary election he ran in the Ruwanwella Electoral District, representing the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), failing by 417 votes although he did win the seat at the subsequent elections in 1970, defeating the sitting member P. C. Imbulana by 2,936 votes. He however failed to get re-elected in 1977 losing by 4,067 votes to P. C. Imbulana. Athauda was elected as a member of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council and became the Leader of the Opposition at the Provincial Council in 1988. Berty Premalal Dissanayake (15 July 1954 – 27 September 2013) was the chief Minister of the North Central Province of Sri Lanka from June 1999 to 2012. He was of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and part of the United People's Freedom Alliance. He died on 27 September 2013. Early life Berty Premalal Dissanayake was a Sri Lankan politician who was active in the political scene in the late 20th century. Nandimithra Ekanayake
Mahinda Nandimithra Ekanayake (born 26 December 1943 in Handala, Wattala) is a Sri Lankan politician. Early career Prior to entering politics in 1989, he held a number of positions with the Rural Development Department. At the age of 21, he worked as a rural development officer. He was ultimately promoted to district officer and subsequently served as the Chief Officer in charge of the Rural Development Training Center at Nalanda, Matale. During his time in the Rural Development Department, he became known as a writer and journalist. In 1984, Nandimithra joined the growing Sri Lanka Mahajana Party.
