The 9th Umm al-Ma'arik Championship ( ar, بطولة أم المعارك التاسعة) was the ninth occurrence of the Umm al-Ma'arik Championship, organised by the Iraq Football Association. The top eight teams of the 1998–99 Iraqi Premier League competed in the tournament. Essam Hamad Salem ( ar, عصام حمد سالم; born 22 October 1973) is an Iraqi football coach and former player. He played as a midfielder for Iraq in the 2000 Asian Cup. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Mahmoud el Karim (1916–1999) was a squash player from Egypt. He won the British Open men's title four consecutive times from 1947–1950. Playing career Karim first played golf and tennis at the Gezira Sporting Club in Cairo before discovering squash at the age of 15. He enjoyed it so much, that he came to devote all his time to the sport. In 1947, Karim captured the British Open title for the first time. The 1947 final was the last occasion on which the British Open was decide in a best-of-three-matches contest between the two finalists.
