The 1999 DFS Classic was a women's tennis tournament played on grass courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham in the United Kingdom that was part of Tier III of the 1999 WTA Tour. The WTA Tier III tournaments were Women's Tennis Association tennis third-level tournaments held from 1990 until the end of the 2008 season. The line-up of events varied over the years due to tournaments being promoted, demoted or cancelled. Nathalie Dechy
Nathalie Dechy (born 21 February 1979) is a former professional tennis player from France. Dechy is a three-time doubles Grand Slam champion, winning the 2006 US Open women's doubles title with Vera Zvonareva, the 2007 French Open mixed doubles title with Andy Ram, and the 2007 US Open women's doubles title with Dinara Safina. Her biggest singles achievement is reaching the semifinals of the 2005 Australian Open. At the 2008 Wimbledon Championships, she faced world No. 1 and reigning French Open champion Ana Ivanovic. Joanne Ward
Joanne Ward (born 22 June 1975) is a British former tennis player. She competed in five Wimbledon Championships between 1994 and 2000, losing each time in the first round, and has represented the Great Britain Fed Cup team. She was for a time the British number two. Career Aged 16, Ward was told she would never play tennis again, after two knee operations. In 1994, she won the UK Tennis National Championships, beating British number one Clare Wood in the semifinals. In the same year, she made her debut at the Wimbledon Championships, losing in the first round to Dominique Monami. She also competed at Wimbledon in 1996, 1998 and 2000, losing first-round matches to Claire Taylor, Karen Cross and Anke Huber respectively. Louise Latimer (tennis)
Louise Latimer (born 19 January 1978) is a former professional tennis player from Great Britain. Biography Latimer was born and raised in Norwich for the first 12 years of her life, before her family moved to Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham. Her father Colin worked at Birmingham University and her mother Jo was a nurse. A right-handed player, Latimer turned professional in 1995 and won her first ITF title in Portugal in 1997. Latimer debuted in the Wimbledon main draw in 1998 and beat Jana Kandarr, before exiting in the second round. She made the second round at Wimbledon on a further two occasions, including in 2000, when she took 11th seed Anke Huber to three sets. In 2000 she won two ITF $25,000 titles, in Hull and Surbiton. Julie Pullin
Julie Pullin (born 5 November 1975), now Julie Hobbs, is a retired British tennis player who turned professional in 1993. She won eight singles titles and 25 doubles titles on the ITF circuit, many with compatriot Lorna Woodroffe. She is most well known for receiving nine wild cards over her career for the ladies' singles at Wimbledon, but failing to win a match. She reached her career-high WTA singles ranking of 125 in April 2000, after she achieved her best performance in a Grand Slam championship, qualifying and reaching the second round of the Australian Open for the first time. Pullin had defeated Slovak 15th seed Martina Suchá in the first round of qualifying 6–4, 7–5, Gloria Pizzichini 6–4, 6–0 in the second and American Samantha Reeves in the final round 6–2, 7–6. A wild card (also wildcard or wild-card and also known as an at-large berth or at-large bid) is a tournament or playoff berth awarded to an individual or team that fails to qualify in the normal way; for example, by having a high ranking or winning a qualifying stage. Miriam Oremans (born 9 September 1972) is a former professional female tennis player from the Netherlands. On 26 July 1993 she reached her career-high singles ranking of number 25. She did not win any singles titles (Oremans did have two Satellite tournament wins in 1989), but did win three titles in doubles. In 1992 she was runner-up together with Jacco Eltingh in the Mixed Doubles finals of Wimbledon. Mariaan de Swardt (born 18 March 1971) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa, who was active from 1988 to 2001.
