The 1998 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 49th season in the National Football League and their 53rd overall. The Niners were heavily favored to represent the NFC in Super Bowl XXXIII for the second time in the 1990s. The season saw the return of Jerry Rice, who missed most of 1997 with a major knee injury. After defeating the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the playoffs, thanks to young Terrell Owens's game-winning catch, referred to by fans as "The Catch II", San Francisco's season ended with a loss to the Atlanta Falcons the following week in the divisional round. The National Football Conference - Western Division or NFC West is one of the four Division (sport), divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It currently has four members: the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks. Jeremy Newberry
Jeremy David Newberry (born March 23, 1976) is a former center in the National Football League. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He was born in Antioch, California, and played college football at California. Newberry has also played for the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. Currently, Newberry works as the KPIX 5 NFL Analyst. The 1999 season was the San Francisco 49ers' 50th in the National Football League (NFL) and their 54th overall. This was also Steve Young's last season in the league as he was forced to retire due to concussions. San Francisco started the season with a 3–1 record, but Young suffered his season- and career-ending concussion against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.
