1998 North Queensland Cowboys Season
The 1998 North Queensland Cowboys season was the 4th in the club's history. Coached by Tim Sheens and captained by John Lomax, they competed in the inaugural season of the newly formed National Rugby League (NRL) competition. Season summary After a disappointing 1997 season, the Cowboys entered the newly unified National Rugby League competition with high hopes. While the squad from a year earlier was kept mostly the same, the club added former Australia and Queensland representative and local favourite Dale Shearer, veteran forward Dale Fritz from the recently folded Perth Reds and former Canberra Raiders flyer Noa Nadruku, who reunited with coach Tim Sheens. The year got off to the best start possible, as the club went on a four-game winning streak, the first time they'd won three and four games in a row. Newcastle Knights
The Newcastle Knights are an Australian professional rugby league club based in Newcastle, New South Wales. They compete in Australasia's premier rugby league competition, the National Rugby League (NRL) premiership. Playing in red and blue, the Knights joined the top tier competition in 1988, 79 years after the previous Newcastle based team, the Newcastle Rebels had departed the Sydney competition with the formation of a separate league competition based in the Newcastle region. The club has won two premierships over its history (1997 and 2001) and is one of only two clubs (the other being the Wests Tigers) that has never lost a grand final in which it has participated. Paul Pensini
Paul Pensini (born 14 October 1977) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League. Primarily a , he represented Italy at international level. Playing career An Atherton Roosters junior, Pensini joined the North Queensland Cowboys in 1998. In Round 14 of the 1998 NRL season, he made his NRL debut in the Cowboys' 14–16 loss to the St George Dragons. Ray Mercy
Ray Mercy (born 25 March 1974) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s. Primarily a or er, he played for Parramatta Eels and the North Queensland Cowboys. Playing career A Norths Ipswich Tigers junior, Mercy made his first grade debut for Parramatta in Round 7 of the 1995 ARL season, coming off the bench in a 4–40 loss to the Auckland Warriors at Parramatta Stadium. He played 9 games for Parramatta in his debut season, which were all losses as the club finished second last. At the end of 1995, Mercy was released by the Eels as the club was looking to rebuild. In 1996, Mercy played for the Atherton Roosters in the Cairns District Rugby League. In 1997, Mercy joined the North Queensland Cowboys. Scott Wilson (rugby League Born 1970)
Scott Wilson (born 8 November 1970) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played as a or . Playing career Wilson as a youngster played in the South Sydney Juniors competition for Coogee Randwick Wombats. While at South Sydney High School in 1986, Wilson was selected to play for the Australian Schoolboys team. Wilson made his first grade début in Round 8 of the 1988 season against Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval, 25 April, coming off the bench in the second half. It later transpired that he was used as an illegal replacement and South Sydney were ultimately stripped of the two competition points they earned that afternoon. Wests Tigers
The Wests Tigers are an Australian professional Rugby league, rugby league football team, based in the Inner West and South West Sydney. They have competed in the National Rugby League since being formed at the end of the 1999 NRL season as a joint-venture club between the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies. The Wests Tigers started playing in the 2000 NRL season and they won their maiden premiership in 2005 NRL season, 2005. Junior Kangaroos
The Junior Kangaroos side represents Australia in the sport of rugby league. They are commonly known as the Junior Kangaroos, after the native marsupial of that name. Since 2019, they are an under-23 side, with players selected from the NRL. They are administered by the Australian Rugby League Commission. History Prior to 2010, the Junior Kangaroos was selected on an under-19 age basis. The best Australian players 19 years of age or younger, would represent the country against the likes of the Junior Kiwis, Papua New Guinea and Tonga, sometimes as curtain raisers to the senior Kangaroos games.
