Australian Individual Speedway Championship
The Australian Solo Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Australian national champion. It is organised by Motorcycling Australia (MA) and is the oldest continuously running national speedway championship in the world having been run since 1926 with the exception of 1942-1945 when racing was suspended during World War II and 1955-1961 when the championship was not held. The first Australian Solo Championship in 1926 was held at the Newcastle Showground in Newcastle. It was won by American rider Cecil Brown from Mick Brennan and Roy Hindle. Legendary Danish rider Ole Olsen (1976) and Australia's own Jason Crump (2007) are the only riders who have won the championship while being the reigning Speedway World Champion. Steven Paul Johnston (born 12 October 1971) is former international motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Johnston signed for the Sheffield Tigers for the 1992 British League Division Two season. He left Sheffield to join the Long Eaton Invaders for the 1993 season. While at Long Eaton, Johnston began to put in notable performances including winning the Western Australian Individual Speedway Championship in 1993 and 1996 at the Claremont Speedway and being the European Grasstrack Champion in 1996. Brett Wayne Woodifield (born 15 March 1976) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Woodifield started his British leagues career during the 1997 Premier League speedway season, where he rode for Skegness Braves and the Isle of Wight Islanders, following the former's withdrawal from the league. The following season he signed for Peterborough Panthers and was part of the team that secured a 1998 League and cup double. He was also selected by Peterborough for the Premier League Pairs Championship to partner Glenn Cunningham and the pair won the Championship. Frank Dean Smart (born 27 October 1969) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Smart started racing in the British leagues during the 1990 National League season, when riding for the Exeter Falcons. He struggled to establish himself in the team and it was not until the 1992 season that he was a regular in the Exeter team. Following a poor 1993 season he did not return to Britain and Exeter until the 1997 season, where he had improved significantly and recorded a season average of 7.28. Nigel Sadler (born 17 September 1978) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Sadler made his British leagues debut during the 1997 Premier League speedway season, where he rode for Skegness Braves. However, Skegness disbanded and were replaced mid season by Isle of Wight Warriors. Sadler also won the silver medal at the 1997 Australian Under-21 Individual Speedway Championship. Craig Watson (born 6 August 1976 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian motorcycle speedway rider who rode for the Newport Wasps, Poole Pirates, Belle Vue Aces, Glasgow Tigers and Birmingham Brummies in the Elite League. Watson was the winner of the 1996 NSW State Championship. He is also a triple Australian Longtrack Champion, having won the championship in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
