The 1997 Recopa Sudamericana was the ninth Recopa Sudamericana, an annual football match between the winners of the previous season's Copa Libertadores and Supercopa Sudamericana competitions. The match was contested between River Plate, winners of the 1996 Copa Libertadores, and Vélez Sársfield, winners of the 1996 Supercopa Sudamericana, on April 13, 1997. Recopa Sudamericana
The CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana ( pt, CONMEBOL Recopa Sul-Americana), known also as the Recopa Sudamericana or CONMEBOL Recopa, and simply as the Recopa (, ; "Winners' Cup"), is an annual international club association football, football competition organized by CONMEBOL since 1988. It is a match-up between the champions of the previous year's Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, South America's premier club competitions. The competition has had several formats over its lifetime. Initially, the champions of the Copa Libertadores and Supercopa Libertadores contested it. José Luis Félix Chilavert González (; born 27 July 1965) is a Paraguayan former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Sportivo Luqueño, Guaraní, San Lorenzo de Almagro, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sarsfield, RC Strasbourg, Peñarol, and the Paraguay national football team. Eduardo Berizzo Magnolo (; born 13 November 1969) is an Argentine retired footballer who played as a central defender. He is the manager of Chile. During his 18-year professional career he played for six teams in four countries, mainly Newell's Old Boys, River Plate and Celta. The bearer of an Italian passport, he did not occupy a non-European Union spot while competing in Europe. He represented Argentina in two Copa América tournaments. Roberto Oscar Bonano (born 24 January 1970) is an Argentine retired footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Already in his 30s, he moved from River Plate to Spain where he spent the remainder of his 17-year professional career in representation of three teams, mainly Alavés. Bonano earned 13 caps for Argentina, and was part of the squad at the 2002 World Cup. Mauricio Andrés Pellegrino Luna (; born 5 October 1971) is an Argentine former professional footballer who played as a centre-back, currently the manager of Chilean club Universidad de Chile. After nearly one decade with Vélez Sarsfield, Pellegrino spent the vast majority of his remaining career in Spain, amassing La Liga totals of 176 games and five goals over the course of eight seasons for three clubs, notably Valencia with which he won three titles (he won nine while in Argentina). Flavio Gabriel Zandoná (born April 8, 1967), nicknamed ''Chino'' (Chinese), is a former Argentine footballer who played most of his career for Vélez Sársfield of the Argentine Primera, winning 8 honours with the club. Fernando Daniel Pandolfi (born May 29, 1974 in Buenos Aires) is a former Argentine football striker who played most of his career for Argentine Primera División club Vélez Sarsfield. He was part of the successful team that won several trophies during the mid-1990s, including the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup. Patricio Alejandro Camps (born January 22, 1972 in Buenos Aires) is a former Argentine football player. He is of Ukrainian descent. Club career Camps joined Velez as a 14 years old in 1986, he made his breakthrough into the first team in 1991. He was part of four Argentine league championship campaigns and also won three international championships. Roberto Trotta (born 28 January 1969 in Pigüé) is an Argentine football manager and former defender. Trotta played club football in Argentina, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Ecuador. Marcelo Daniel Gallardo (; born 18 January 1976) is an Argentine football coach and former professional player who last managed River Plate. Gallardo began his career in the club's youth divisions, and made his debut in the Argentine Primera División at age 17 in 1993.
