1997 Catalan Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1997 Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix was the thirteenth round of the 1997 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on 14 September 1997 at the Circuit de Catalunya. 500cc race report This race was most notable for the threeway battle for victory between Mick Doohan, Carlos Checa and Àlex Crivillé. Mick Doohan has a firm points advantage over his adversaries with 295 points, having already won the title last round. Mick Doohan took Saturday's pole position with a time of 1:45.990. In second place starts Carlos Checa, followed by Nobuatsu Aoki and Doriano Romboni in third and fourth position. The second row of the grid consists out of Tadayuki Okada in fifth, Luca Cadalora in sixth, Àlex Crivillé in seventh and Kenny Roberts Jr. in eighth. Manuel "Sete" Gibernau Bultó (born 15 December 1972) is a Spanish former professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer who is a 9-time 500cc/MotoGP race winner and a two-time overall runner-up in and . His racing career spans three different eras of motorcycle racing, beginning with the two-stroke-dominated period prior to the 2002 season, and the four-stroke MotoGP era. Kirk McCarthy
Kirk Richard McCarthy (18 November 1966 – 15 August 2004), in Melbourne Victoria, Australia, was an Australian motorcycle road racer who competed in several major championships both at home and internationally. He was killed in an Australian Superbike Championship race at Queensland Raceway in 2004. Superbikes McCarthy began racing in the Australian Superbike Championship in 1992, for the Ansett Suzuki team. In 1994 he joined the crack Winfield Honda team, and went on to win the 1995 title. This earned him a factory Superbike World Championship ride with Suzuki for 1996, finishing 13th overall without a podium. The ELF 500 ROC was a motorcycle that competed in the and 500 cc Road Racing World Championship. ELF 500 ROC A new European motorcycle made its debut under the Elf Aquitaine, Elf banner in 1996. The engine was a Swissauto 500 cc Two-stroke cycle, two-stroke V4 engine, designed as a compact and powerful unit which could be used in both sidecars, sidecar racing outfits and solo bikes. It utilised a single balance shaft and a 6-speed cassette-type gearbox. Its crankshaft design allowed for the engine to fire at different angles, allowing the rider to choose either big-bang firing order, "big-bang" or "screamer" engine characteristics. Juan Borja (motorcycle Racer)
Juan Bautista Borja (born 3 February 1970) is a former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer from Spain. Having won the FCIM 125cc European championship in 1992, he first raced on the world stage at the 1993 FIM motorcycle Grand Prix at the Circuito del Jarama, Madrid, but retired on lap 19 in the 250cc class riding a privateer Honda. For 1994, he gained a series of one-off privateer rides in the 250cc class, starting with an Aprilia at the 1994 Australian motorcycle Grand Prix, and finishing the season on a Honda, placing him 30th in the championship. Moving to the 500cc class for 1995, he rode out the season placing twelfth on the ROC-Yamaha. Takuma Aoki
is a Japanese former road racer of motorcycles at Grand Prix level. He began his Grand Prix career in 1993. From to , Aoki competed in the World Superbike Championship, winning one race in that series. In 1996, he won All Japan Championship Superbike class champion. He returned to Grand Prix racing with Honda in 1997, enjoying his best season when he finished fifth in the 500cc world championship. A spinal injury in a 1998 motorcycle crash left him paralyzed below the waist. Aoki has continued to work with Honda, helping them develop cars for disabled people. Giacomo Agostini
Giacomo Agostini (; born 16 June 1942) is an Italian multi-time world champion Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. Nicknamed Ago, he amassed 122 Grand Prix wins and 15 World Championship titles. Of these, 68 wins and 8 titles came in the 500 cc class, the rest in the 350 cc class. For these achievements obtained over the course of a career spanning 17 years, the AMA described him as "...perhaps the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time".
