1997 Alberta General Election
The 1997 Alberta general election was held on March 11, 1997, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Ralph Klein's Conservatives were re-elected, with increased number of seats in the Legislature. Liberal Official Opposition lost some seats dropping from 32 to 18, but retaining the status of Official Opposition. NDP gained two, to have a grand total of two seats. Background The Progressive Conservative Association had governed Alberta since 1971, and premier Ralph Klein led the party into his second general election as party leader. The previous election in 1993 was the best result for the Liberal Party since its last electoral victory in 1917. The 24th Alberta Legislative Assembly was in session from April 14, 1997, to February 12, 2001, with the membership of the assembly determined by the results of the 1997 Alberta general election held on March 11, 1997. The Legislature officially resumed on April 14, 1997, and continued until the fifth session was prorogued and dissolved on February 12, 2001, prior to the 2001 Alberta general election on March 12, 2001. Alberta's twenty-fourth government was controlled by the majority Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta, led by Premier Ralph Klein. Alberta New Democratic Party
The Alberta New Democratic Party (french: Nouveau Parti démocratique de l'Alberta), commonly shortened to Alberta's NDP, is a social-democratic political party in Alberta, Canada. It is the provincial Alberta affiliate of the federal New Democratic Party, and the successor to the Alberta section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the even earlier Alberta wing of the Canadian Labour Party and the United Farmers of Alberta. From the mid-1980s to 2004, the party abbreviated its name as the "New Democrats" (ND). The party served as Official Opposition in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1982 to 1993. Barrhead-Westlock
Barrhead-Westlock was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first-past-the-post method of voting from 1993 to 2004. History Boundary history Barrhead-Westlock was created from Barrhead, Westlock-Sturgeon and a small portion of Athabasca-Lac La Biche in 1993. Its largest communities were its namesake towns Barrhead and Westlock, as well as the town of Swan Hills. Its boundaries remained unchanged in the redistribution that took effect in 1997. The riding was replaced by Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock in the 2003 electoral boundary re-distribution, which covered the entire area of Barrhead-Westlock and a small portion of Redwater. Brian Evans (politician)
Brian John Evans (born August 18, 1950) is a Canadians, Canadian lawyer and former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1989 to 1997. During his time in office, he served as a cabinet minister in the Ralph Klein government. Education and law career Born in Edmonton, Alberta, the son of Cecil Road and Margaret Anne (Peters), Evans received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 and a Bachelor of Law degree in 1975 from the University of Alberta. He articled with the Edmonton law firm of Emery Jamieson until opening Canmore, Alberta's first full-time law office in 1976, the year he was called to the Alberta Bar. Janis Tarchuk is a Canadian politician. She was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, representing the constituency of Banff-Cochrane as a Progressive Conservative. Banff-Cochrane
Banff-Cochrane was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1940 to 1975, and again from 1979 to 2019. The Banff-Cochrane electoral district is home to the town of Banff and the popular tourist destination Banff National Park, environmental issues tend to dominate here. The cost of living is significantly high especially in Canmore where there is a struggle to fill low wage service sector jobs, due to the high cost of living. Bears and wildlife encounters are also common in this riding, requiring extra attention to waste disposal. Melvin Percy Joseph Cardinal (July 17, 1941 – January 12, 2023) was a Canadian politician from Alberta. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1989 until 2008 as a Progressive Conservative representing the electoral districts of Athabasca-Lac La Biche, Athabasca-Wabasca, and Athabasca-Redwater. Athabasca-Wabasca was a provincial electoral district in Alberta mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using first-past-the-post balloting from 1993 to 2004. Electoral district history The riding was created in 1993 when the district of Fort McMurray shrank to encompass the northern Alberta city. Athabasca-Wabasca completely covered the same boundaries except for the city of Fort McMurray. The riding was abolished in the 2004 electoral boundary re-distribution when the district of Fort McMurray merged and formed Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo. Airdrie-Rocky View was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1997 to 2004. History The riding was created in the 1997 electoral district re-distribution to encompass the area North and East of the City of Calgary. The former Three Hills-Airdrie electoral district was split, with the north part of the riding merged with Olds-Didsbury, to form Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, the south half forming the eastern portion of Airdrie-Rocky View. The southern portion of Olds-Didsbury and western portion of Drumheller would also be transferred to Airdrie-Rocky View. Naomi Rankin (born c. 1953) is a Canadian politician and the leader of the Communist Party – Alberta since 1992. She is the longest-serving political party leader in the province, and has run as a perennial candidate in every federal and provincial election in Alberta since 1982. Political career Rankin became leader of the Communist Party in Alberta in 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union sent the party into crisis. Since 1982, she has run in every provincial and federal election for the Communist Party – Alberta and the Communist Party of Canada respectively. Rankin herself usually fields around 100 votes. The Forum Party of Alberta was a political party in the Province of Alberta, Canada. The party was created on March 2, 1995. It later became the Equity Party, which held its founding convention in May 2000. The Equity Party did not nominate candidates in the 2001 election, and the 2004 election. The Equity Party had five basic goals, social tolerance for all Albertans, fiscal accountability, grass roots accountability, including revenue sharing between riding associations, environmental responsibility and reforming the First Past the Post electoral system.
