1995 America's Cup
The 29th America's Cup was contested between the winner of the 1995 Citizen Cup, Team Stars & Stripes, which switched to the yacht ''Young America'' (USA 36) for the competition, and the winner of the 1995 Louis Vuitton Cup, Team New Zealand, with the yacht ''Black Magic'' (NZL 32). New Zealand swept all five races to take the cup away from the US for only the second time in 144 years. For the first time since 1930, the format changed to a best-of-nine series, which remained through 2007. New Zealand Maritime Museum
The New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui A Tangaroa is a maritime museum in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located on Hobson Wharf, adjacent to the Viaduct Harbour in central Auckland. It houses exhibitions spanning New Zealand's maritime history, from the first Polynesian explorers and settlers to modern day triumphs at the America's Cup. Its Maori name is '' 'Te Huiteanaui-A-Tangaroa' '' – holder of the treasures of Tangaroa (the Sea God). History The museum's founding director was Rodney Wilson, who from 1989 led fundraising efforts to establish the museum, which opened in 1993, the year the America's Cup regatta was held in Auckland. The cost was estimated at NZ$11.1 million. The entrance of the museum incorporates the Launchman's Building, a structure built in 1920 which formerly housed a number of small boating companies. Murray Jones (sailor)
Murray Selwyn Jones (born 1957 in Lower Hutt) is a New Zealand sailor. Sailing career Jones represented New Zealand in the Flying Dutchman (dinghy), Flying Dutchman class in 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. Jones finished Sailing at the 1988 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman, 5th in 1988 and Sailing at the 1992 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman, 4th in 1992, alongside Greg Knowles. Jones was part of Team New Zealand that won the America's Cup in 1995 America's Cup, 1995 and then defended the trophy in 2000 America's Cup, 2000. Jones was one of six prominent sailors who then left Team New Zealand and joined Alinghi, winning the 2003 America's Cup and 2007 America's Cup. Jones was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2010. Along with Russell Coutts, Jones later joined Oracle Team USA and was involved in the 2013 America's Cup victory. Dennis Conner
Dennis Walter Conner (born September 16, 1942) is an American yachtsman. He is noted for winning a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympics, two Star World Championships, and three wins in the America's Cup. Sailing career Conner was born September 16, 1942, in San Diego. He competed in the 1976 Olympics together with Conn Findlay and took the bronze medal in the Tempest class. Conner also took part in the 1979 Admiral's Cup, as helmsman on the Peterson 45 named ''Williwaw''. Ross "Rosco" Halcrow (born 17 November 1966) is a New Zealand sailor who has won both the America's Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race. Halcrow was a sailmaker and backup crew member for New Zealand Challenge in both the 1987 America's Cup and 1992 America's Cup. He sailed in the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race on '' Fisher & Paykel NZ''. He sailed on '' Pinta'' when it won the One Ton Cup in 1993. Peter Blake (sailor)
Sir Peter James Blake (1 October 1948 – 5 December 2001) was a New Zealand yachtsman who won the 1989–1990 Whitbread Round the World Race, held the Jules Verne Trophy from 1994 to 1997 by setting the around the world sailing record as co-skipper of ''ENZA New Zealand'', and led New Zealand to successive victories in the America's Cup. Blake was shot and killed by pirates while monitoring environment change on the Amazon River on 5 December 2001. He was 53 years old. Warwick Fleury
Warwick David Fleury is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in eight America's Cups. He competed with New Zealand Challenge in the 1987, 1988 and 1992 America's Cup campaigns. Fleury was a trimmer with Team New Zealand during their successful 1995 America's Cup campaign and 2000 America's Cup defence. Fleury joined Alinghi and was part of their 2003 America's Cup victory, 2007 America's Cup defence and 2010 America's Cup loss. In 2010 he was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame. Robbie Naismith (born 4 May 1964) is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple Whitbread Round the World Races and America's Cups. From Whangārei, Naismith sailed in the 1989 Admiral's Cup before sailing the 1989–90 Whitbread Round the World Race on '' NCB Ireland''. Andrew Taylor (born 22 July 1963) is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple Whitbread Round the World Races and America's Cups. Craig Monk
Craig John Monk (born 23 May 1967 in Stratford, New Zealand) is a competitive sailor who won a bronze medal in the Finn class at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Monk also competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta after narrowly beating future America's Cup skipper Dean Barker for selection to the New Zealand team. He finished 13th. Monk has since been extensively involved in America's Cup racing. He was recruited as a grinder by Russell Coutts for the successful challenge in 1995 and the subsequent defence in 2000. Jeremy Scantlebury is a New Zealand sailor who has competed in multiple America's Cups. Scantlebury sailed with Digby Taylor on ''NZI Enterprise'' during the 1985–86 Whitbread Round the World Race. Matthew Mason (born in Whangarei) is a New Zealand sailor (sport), sailor known as ’Kauri’. He sailed the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race for five consecutive races between 1984 and 1988. He joined New Zealand Challenge for the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup challenge. Mason sailed on the 1993–94 Whitbread Round the World Race with ''Winston (yacht), Winston''. He then joined Team New Zealand and was part of the crew on ''NZL 32'' that won the 1995 America's Cup.
