1995 A-League
The 1995 A-League season was the sixth A-League season and first after being renamed from the American Professional Soccer League. Overview In 1995, the American Professional Soccer League, which was the de facto highest level of U.S. soccer (officially sanctioned U.S. second division) until MLS commenced, changed its name to the A-League. The league had ended its 1994 season with seven teams and intended to expand to ten for the 1995 season with new franchises in Detroit and Atlanta. These plans were stymied when the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Los Angeles Salsa and Toronto Rockets all folded. This left the league with only four teams. The addition of the New York Centaurs and Atlanta Ruckus gave the league six teams and allowed it to compete for another season. American Professional Soccer League
The American Professional Soccer League (APSL) was a professional men's soccer league with teams from the United States and later Canada. It was formed in 1990 by the merger of the third American Soccer League with the Western Soccer League. It was the first outdoor soccer league to feature teams from throughout the United States since the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984. The league was sanctioned as Division II in the United States soccer league system but was the country's ''de facto'' top professional soccer league until 1995. In 1993, the APSL applied for the vacant Division I role but lost out to Major League Soccer who would begin play in 1996. For its final two seasons in 1995 and 1996, the APSL changed its name to the A-League. It was subsequently absorbed by the emerging USISL organization with six of seven clubs joining the new USISL A-League in 1997. Nick De Santis
Nicolas De Santis (born November 11, 1967) is a former professional soccer player. Club career After beginning his pro career in 1987 with the Montreal Supra of the Canadian Soccer League, he signed for the Montreal Impact in 1993 where he helped the Impact win the league championship in 1994. He earned titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997. He retired as a player following the 2003 season, was second in Impact history for games played (219), as well as fourth for goals scored (21). He also had short spells in the US and Italy. De Santis had a stint in the National Professional Soccer League with the short lived expansion franchise the Toronto ThunderHawks during the 2000-2001 winter indoor season. Lyndon Hooper
Lyndon Hooper (born May 30, 1966) is a Canadian former professional soccer player and former assistant coach of the Toronto Lynx soccer team of the United Soccer Leagues First Division. He was a prominent Canadian international. Club career Guyana-born but moving to Ottawa at age 11, Hooper turned professional in 1987 with the Ottawa Intrepid of the Canadian Soccer League. He continued to play for Wilfrid Laurier University in the autumns from 1986 to 1990 and was named second-team CIAU all-Canadian in 1986 and 1987. Thomas Kouzmanis (born 22 April 1973) is a Canadian former soccer player who played at both professional and international levels. Kouzmanis played as both a midfielder and a striker. Michael Araujo
Michael Araujo is a retired South African soccer player who played professionally in South Africa, the United States, Canada and Ireland. Player Club career Araujo's parents moved from Portugal to South Africa where he was born. In 1986, Araujo entered the College of Boca Raton, now known as Lynn University. He played two seasons of NAIA soccer at Boca Raton, winning the 1987 NAIA national men's soccer championship. Araujo was also a 1987 NAIA Second Team All American. Mo Suri
Moises "Mo" Suri is a retired American soccer player. He played professionally in the National Professional Soccer League, A-League and USISL. In 1986, Suri, younger brother of Caleb Suri, turned professional with the Louisville Thunder of the American Indoor Soccer Association. That season, the Thunder won the AISA championship and Suri was named to the All Rookie Team. He moved to the Milwaukee Wave in 1987 and went on to play four seasons with them. He left the team in 1991, but on October 22, 1992, the Wave signed Suri. He played two seasons with the Wave, then announced his retirement in August 1994. Lloyd Barker (soccer)
Lloyd Barker (born 12 December 1970) is a former professional soccer player who played for the Jamaica national football team. Playing career After beginning his pro career in 1988 with the Ottawa Intrepid of the Canadian Soccer League. He then joined the Montreal Impact in 1993 and was part of the team's starting eleven when the Impact beat the Colorado Foxes 1–0 in the playoff final and won the 1994 league championship. He also helped Montreal win the regular-season titles in 1995, 1996, and 1997. Barker played internationally for Jamaica, including in a 0–3 friendly loss to the United States in Kingston on 22 November 1994.
