The 1992 New Hampshire gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 1992. Republican Party (United States), Republican nominee Steve Merrill, who defeated Ed Dupont and Liz Hager for the Republican nomination, won the election, defeating Deborah Arnie Arnesen, who had defeated Norman D'Amours for the Democratic nomination. Steve Merrill
Stephen Everett Merrill (June 21, 1946 – September 5, 2020) was an American lawyer and Republican politician from Manchester, New Hampshire. He served as the 77th governor of New Hampshire from 1993 to 1997. Early life Merrill was born in Norwich, Connecticut but moved to New Hampshire at an early age. He graduated from Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire and the University of New Hampshire. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1972. In 1972, Merrill joined the United States Air Force as a lawyer. From 1973 to 1975 he was legal counsel to the United States Secretary of the Air Force and from 1975 to 1976 was a special assistant to the assistant secretary of the Air Force. Deborah Arnie Arnesen (born October 1, 1953), is an American radio show host and former politician, serving for eight years as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Early life Arnesen was born in Brooklyn, New York to a Norwegian father and an Italian mother. Political career Arnesen is a former fellow of the Harvard Institute of Politics, and a former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from Orford, New Hampshire, serving from 1984 to 1992. She was the Democratic nominee in the 1992 New Hampshire gubernatorial election and also ran for U.S. Congress in 1996. Judd Alan Gregg (born February 14, 1947) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 76th governor of New Hampshire from 1989 to 1993 and was a United States senator from New Hampshire; in the Senate, Gregg served as chairman of the Senate Health Committee and the Senate Budget Committee. United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 1992, in 12 states and two territories. Going into the elections, six of the seats were held by Democrats and six by Republicans.
